Leghorns -19 weeks to first eggs

I have pallets galore. I'm working on a light weight and dog proof chicken tractor. Compromise. Compromise.

These dogs are half goat. They climb, jump and pole vault. Flat roofs are out. Therefore, think half chicken tractor with a hoop coop on top. Truly a work of art. As soon as it is finished.

Or consider making it light and use a rechargeable electric fence wire it to two or 4 strands on the tractor, consider getting some chicken gizzards and let it go rancid in the sun and drizzle a bit of that sure fire "I wanna roll in it stuff" behind the electrified wire..... sounds more than humane to me.

Another 7 lovely butt berries with one brown today. Looks like we have another double yolk or someone is just an over achiever. We have breakfast for tomorrow!

Vendor brought in some egg and chorizo tacos. I think our eggs are better. ;)

I used to like choritzo until I prepared that stinky stuff in my own home. Now I'll never put it on anything ever again. It's disgusting stuff it'll turn you Vegan.

Oh saw a bunch of pallets pushed out to the curb today so I know what I am doing tomorrow. Also found some tossed away 4x4's in front of another house. I'm looking at some good stuff for coop upgrades, I'm not at all happy with the door right now a smart raccoon could defeat it.

I did, he forgot to include those 50 cent each shrinkwrap freezer bags into his calculations, plus the purchase price of the freezer he had to buy. What did I miss there?
I want the Nutball to see this person's numbers.
That is why I posted it...to give him an idea about the costs of raising meat birds.
That's all.

Yep, this is NOT a for profit enterprise. $5/lb free range organic chicken from a free range organic for profit farm. $3 a pound if you raise them 100% on purchased feed. Less than that if you free range or feed scraps. That's why I want tractors. However, I have issues with grocery $0.50/lb store birds. Issues like flavor or the lack there of. The Barred Rocks have me sold. Let's see if the Cornish are as tasty. If all else fails, I'll go to dual purpose. Straight run will be tricky, but hens will mature longer and still be smaller. If I keep the layer flock going and rotate, that will feed us for 6 months with chicken soup. Hmmm. Chicken and pumpkin soup.

How long does it take the layers to become profitable to keep? Assuming no egg sales? $30 a month in feed for 18 hens? I'll have to crunch numbers and do a yearly estimate.

I got 6 free pumpkins and the layers will probable get 2 plus waste from me eating the other 4.

Now feeding scraps to your laying hens is a whole lot different than generating enough scraps to keep 25 meat birds happy for 8 weeks. Will be a lot of purchased feed.

Need to run to Kroger and see how much they want for their leftover pumpkins and stay away from the clearance candy isle. Well, maybe just one case of candy.
