Truth is I was going off of memory for the name, but if it spreads by someone burning infected wood in their fireplace too then that would be the one. If so it is treatable by an Arborist just very expensively. Drill into the roots and feed em medicine for months on end and cross your fingers was the treatment option for a neighbor of ours who didn't want to loose his heritage Oak.
 
Sounds cheaper to chop, drop and plant fruit. I'd like to do that for the neighbor's Chinese Tallow trees too. Those grow FAST! But I like the line of sight block and the chicken dampening noise qualities... Ho hum.

Will you plant a garden this year? Or just herd chickies?

I've got garden plans along with the previously discussed meat birds in the works. And house renovations...
 
My wife wants one but this soil is so poor I need a dumptruck of compost just for her garden. One of the South Padre Island artists has asked if he can look over our aging Mesquite trees so if they fell any trees that would dictate where the garden would go as we get full sun nowhere in the back. Also I have a neighbor who loves his roundup so that removes a few possibilities as well. So at this time I don't have a good site for one.

I'm mostly growing in containers atm the pineapples I lost I had in the ground but the half day of snow did those in:(, and for containers I mean rootpouches its an Aussie thing made of recycled bottles that autoprunes roots so they don't make a entangled rootball. So in short it depends on a number of factors:p probably need to factor in what the chicken will or won't enjoy too. That'd probably be a good thread to start:

"What crops can I grow the chicken won't destroy?"
 
Afraid the answer is "there isn't one". Fencing is your friend. Fence the birds out of the garden. If they don't eat it, they will scratch around it and pull the roots out.

Start asking for wood chips. Mulch in the short term and compost in a couple of years. If you are in your retirement palace, you've got time to feed the soil. Containers in the meantime.

I've been here for 17 long years and just now starting the chickens and garden. I'm hauling chips from the county collection point. One small load at a time.

Yes we have arrived at our retirement destination even though I have just turned 49 I'm done with war and dealing with people. We just purchased this place back in April. There is a recycling center nearby in McAllen(for bulk compost) and a dump truck dayworker on the corner. I bet I can work a deal on the cheap if he ends up in McAllen for a turn around load. Just sucks I don't speak Spanish just German. Never would have expected there were places in Texas where people don't feel the need to speak English by now I'm stoked when they do.

You dreading the next cold front too? All of next week is expected to be unseasonably cold 30's and 40's, enjoy the sunshine today and tomorrow!
 
One of the White Leghorn (Ideal 236) hens is moping and not acting normal. Definitely feeling an egg in the lower abdomen. Can massage it and move it, but she has not laid. Palpated and gently moved egg. Let us hope this moves and allows her to lay.

Egg production bouncing from 10 to 16. Usually 6 leghorn eggs. All are taking turns or a couple having issues. Still having fun watching them scratch around.

Taking some alfalfa cubes, soaking for 24 hours before feeding. Adding grain and BOSS. Appears they go after the BOSS then peck at the alfalfa and grain.
 
Best of luck with her. Never heard of a breech egg before but glad you have and turned it right!

BTW, my little roo's are turning into a holes. They are chasing me if I turn my back on them and leaving my wife alone. No clue why because if they get close enough for me to catch them I do. When spring arrives next month I am going to be tying them up so they cant hurt each other or the gals, but they will still be able to reach the feed.

I am so ready for these hawks to be gone, there ism't a day that goes by without one or two attempts on my birds(that I notice). Thankfully I have either the right breed or the right mix that they aren't successful.
