Lemon Cuckoo Orpington Auction!

I am really just curious to know "what" she is, so if someone asks in casual conversation I can say she is a _____.

the guy we bought those buffs from has 3 lemon cuckoo 2 roos on hen an sold one big roo to someone who ate it.i told you when you bought them they may have the cuckoo gene.we just bought 15 chicks he just hatched out we will se what happens he sold them to me for 2 bucks a chick so i guess i cant go wrong.told him to have them dna tested to find out if they are pure orps.in a few off those pics it looks like it could be a roo his legs look much bigger then the other one.good luck with all your chicks

Thanks! I do remember that you mentioned "Don't be surprised if she has the cuckoo gene"; we are so pleased she has the pretty feathers, but trying to determine if she is definitely an Orpington?
greenfamilyfarms and EweSheep say she should be pinker? idk

Testing? Interesting! Did he want to do the testing? $2 I thought $5

Hmm the legs do look bigger, Buffy is bigger in comparison in the body too. I just assumed the guess regarding age was a little off or she is thriving from spoiling.

Boy oh boy I sure hope Buffy is not a roo because last night during the lightning storm Blackie "crowed" 3 times! It was some kind of noise she hadn't done before, maybe due to the thundering noise of the terrible storm. That would make 3 out of 4 roos

Good luck with your new chicks too! Post photos on your BYC page!

I'm no expert II but, I think that baby chick is an Orp. The legs in natural sunlight look pale to me.

What do you all think Orpie folks? I'm curious myself b/c I've never owned one but, love to learn.

he does not want to do testing if any of the ones we bought turn out to look like lemon cuckoo we will get them tested before we do anything.you have to remember that lf lemon they would be a project birds so it does take time to breed to standard.yours were 4$ each when i bought them an drove an hour round trip to get them so i lost money on the deal.he sold them for 2 sence i bought the whole hatch an he did not need to brooder them at all.we will have to wait an see what they feather into.you are right did not relize how much bigger buffy was could just be she is older.

Thanks to each of you for posting

muddyhorse: aww, yes! Nice photo, I like how the tail feathers are spread against the contrasting background.

jimmy: how/where is testing like that done? Is your friend on BYC? It would be great to know her actual birthday, maybe they keep a calendar? Do 1 hen & 1 roo both cuckoo produce all cuckoo chicks? (noob question, sorry) If not I hope you get some out of the batch, I luv the camouflage-like coloring of the barred buff and I highly recommend them

I will also be looking for a new chick if Buffy and Blackie turn out to be Roos too!!

Tuffoldhen & beth: Well I will hold off on changing my signature then

Isn't it funny how things happen. We named Buffy for the buff coloring but now we could/should rename her something having to do with lemons because she is so different from our actual buff

I wish I could be a part of the breeding "project" ~ but for now she is just going to be a spoiled pet that will give us some eggs.

If anyone else has an opinion (or photo!) feel free to post (subscribed).
