~Lenore the Cuckoo Marans~[Integration]~{17 weeks}

put a heat lamp over her. her brooder is way too small for her. i called my mom and she told me not to wash her? said it would give her too much stress and it was best to let her heal?

Rosy,

What is recommended is to wash the wound thoroughly with a saline solution. If you dont have any, you can make you own by boiling a quart of water and adding 1 teaspoon of salt, letting it cool, then flushing the wound with that repeatedly.

Then you can slather with antibiotic ointment, like neosporin. That will be about the best you can do for tonite, dont get her too wet, just flush the wound, make sure she stays warm and try to make sure she drinks some water to stay hydrated. If you have vitamins/electrolytes, like aviacharge for birds, or even a bit of pedialyte or gatorade, it would be good to get just a bit of that in her, not too much tho.
Good luck and I am so glad you found her.

Jill

Oh my goodness, I'm so glad you found her. I was fretting. Let us know what the vet says. I know you're worried, but I bet you're relieved at the same time. Sending hugs your way

she made it through the night!! last night i put some water on a bunch of toliet paper and some neosporin - to delute it. her wound is more visable now, and there are some feathers stuck in the wound. im going to cover their run this weekend so they cant get out. today the big chickies are in the coop

Keep a close eye for maggots. They will pop up in no time. Are you still taking her to the vet?
Blukote did miracles for my girls. They are doing great now wounds are healing quite well. I owe that to the Blukote and being very diligent on checking for maggots and making sure they had antibiotics, good food extra TLC. I hope she heals soon! :aww

shes inside, so i dont think shes going to get any maggots. she is on 1/2 mil of anti biotic a day too. she seems to be full of life and i feel bad that she wont/cant go outside until she is fully healed. also - what is Blukote?

more info
- they sealed her wound with this stuff kinda like glue. i think its cheaper, and i dont have to go back in for her to take the stiches out.
-shes on this antibiotic stuff that came in a powder and you mix in 10 1/2 ml of water, and give her 1/2 ml twice for about a week (you give it to her in the water) - also, its orange/pineapple flavored, but im guessing thats just artificial so will she be ok? i heard chickens cant have citrus.
-the vet tech said she is going to buy her daughter chickens to keep her daughters mind off boys.
-the vet told us to call the local animal shelter and rent out a cat trap for the stray, they will rehome him

-i think we should buy one - our neighbor has 7-8 cats. we'd give them back to her - but she doesnt believe us when we say they are in our yard, also, we have more neighbors that have more cats, its just we dont know which ones belong to which
-Lenore is full of life again

oh! questions:

- can i give her some outside time? her wound is sealed and she already misses it.
-now that shes on antibiotics do i need to give her electrolites?
-is she ok at room temp? last night she was with a heat lamp because she was shivering, today she has had it on (still on) and doesnt seem to think its too hot...
-to cover their run should i use chicken wire, or netting?
-while i'm at wilco (a farm store) should i invest in getting electroliteS?

will post pics of injuries (although bad quality since i'm using my phone) either tonight or tommorow
