Lester's a daddy! Lester PICs pg2 - Baby PICs Pg8

Ok, I think the hatch is finally done and moved everyone to the brooder. Total count is 5 Lester babies (split lav and black orps) and 10 Araucana chicks.

Thanks Buster! I am very anxious for them to grow up too.

They are already little sweeties and come running over to me every time I go in to check on them.

Sara - keep hatching cookie - the more you hatch, the better chance you'll get a pullet. LOL

OMG how exciting...the fun has begun! Now whats the plan for all those pullet babies....they all look like pullets to me. Does each of those chicks have a lavender gene? Do you breed the pullets back to Lester, or to his younger brother?

I believe they should all carry the lav gene, but this is pretty new to me so I am learning as I go. I want to see how the little one grows out before I decide if I will use him for sure in the program, but if he is as nice as Lester then he will likely be raised up with these girls and be used for one breeding pen.

I will also continue hatching to ensure I get enough pullets for winter for both boys. I have few eggs due next week and another 6-7 due the week after and will continue setting until I am out of room to grow them out. I figure the pullets will kick into lay late fall, winter timeframe and I can continue my program right through winter (at least for the first year) breeding the split lavenders back to the lav males. By spring I should have some pure lavender progeny if all goes well.

Then I just have to work on body type and any other defects I find along the way.

Great job, Jody. This will be interesting to follow.

Do you have plans for any of the extra cockerals you'll be hatching? If no one steps up to the plate I would take a cockeral or two.
