Brought the first load of lumber home today! It was after twelve before we got home with all our goodies, but we did get the building started! My hubby actually started yesterday by going out and clearing the small scrub oaks and baby pine trees. This afternoon we started by raking up the leaves and pine straw. So here is our first picture of just the cleared land.

We were able to work for about 3 hours this afternoon after unloading lumber. We got the foundation posts dug and set, the flooring framed up, and the first of three plywood sheets for the floor nailed down. Tomorrow we hope to get the rest of the floor done and hopefully start framing up walls!

Whats amazing to me is the current coop is smaller than that fullsize piece of plywood my daughter is standing on!

This is a fun and special time for you and your family. It looks as though you have a plan, a method, and a skilled man to swing the hammer. Good to see your building is plumb and square, you will count yourself lucky for many years, that you have built well. As I noted, savor and enjoy the build. It is a time of such promise, both for you and your flock.

Best to you and your birds,

RJ

Is that 8x12? That's the size my new coop is going to be. Are you doing peaked roof or slanted. Good luck with your build. I'm waiting for the snow to melt here before I can start building. But on a good note I start to buy my materials this coming Friday.

Yep, it's 8 x 12, it will have a peaked roof. Good Luck with your build! It's a fun time !

A beautiful weekend! Unfortunetly I had to work, but my hubby made alot of progress with a little help from our 10yr old! The floor is done , the walls and roof are framed, and they got a tarp over the whole thing (just in time for the rain that we'll be getting for the next 5 days!) Next up is framing in the roof vents, windows, chicken door and poop chute! Meanwhile we have been given some old wood siding, it should be enough for two sides! Woohoo!!!! We've got friends keeping an eye out for more! The family has started calling this project the" Chicken Palace", hehehe.....

The chickens view from the human door to the "commons area" and two runs. Have to use your imagination!

I'm standing in the human door ,there will be a window to my right and the chicken door to my left. And we still have to do some work on the steps, that last stepup is a bit steep!

That will be a nice building for you and your birds. I do so enjoy seeing nice buildings go up for our chicken friends. Birds in nice places tend to get good care as well… I highly approve of good care for our charges. I believe yours will be well cared for.

Best to you and your project,

RJ

The rain finally cleared up, so the tarp came off! Today we got the windows and doors (human and chicken) framed in. The girls were free ranging this afternoon so they came over to inspect!
Hey Mom! Our door goes here right? Yes Gertrude, you're standing in your door!
Our leghorns are not the brightest birds in the yard, so my hubby marked the chicken exit for them....smart aleck! hehehe

Ta da!! Three windows, human door, chicken door all framed in, the floor did get a little wet from all the rain so hopefully it will dry out in the next couple of days so we can get it sealed. We want to seal the floor before we put the siding up just so we don't have problems with the fumes! (I have problems with asthma and migraines triggered by strong smells like painting in closed in areas!)
