I have a 3 month old Orpington cockerel that was panting and lethargic on Sunday. It was warm with almost no breeze, but nothing like the heat we had earlier in the week. I was changing their water every day about noonish and adding ice blocks. We got him set up in the basement and gave him electrolytes with vitamins, and he perked up a fair bit, but from there there really has been no change. He eats and drinks fine, but is almost always lying down, and is droopy when he stands (especially on the left…hopefully it shows in the pictures). He is unsteady on his feet and goes pale in the face when he walks. No respiratory signs, poop is looking normal, albeit large because he is not going as much as usual. No sign of parasites. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Have you checked his crop for impacted material or yeast causing fluids?

He may also be still suffering from heat sickness.

He may have worms. It wouldn't hurt to worm him.

He could have a bacterial infection.

The last possibility is an avian virus causing tumors and other havoc. If this is the cause, he will decline from here.

Does he tire easily and open his mouth to breath when he moves around a lot? The paling of the face sounds like he’s anemic, which can be caused by any number of things, but a worry could also be that he’s not getting enough blood flow when he starts moving around, so maybe a heart condition.
Hoping it’s something mild and he bounces back with rest.

Up until Sunday he was one of the most active birds out of the bunch. Now he does tire easily, but he’s not mouth breathing. The heart issue never crossed my mind. He was a bit stronger this morning, so hopefully we are heading in the right direction. 🤞

Thank you for the things to check. His crop seems fine, so I wormed him. 🤞
