yesterday I found our duck, 7 years of age with blood around its tail feathers. I caught him and put him separately in the duck coop. today, he is very slow in getting around. his tailfeathers are very very dirty and possibly more blood underneath. he has always had wet feathers due to not being able to reach his oil gland. he refuses to eat and drink. there are flies around his tail feathers that possibly bite him or annoy him because he keeps moving spots reluctantly. we have decided on a bath to get the filth off of him; if needed, we will spray duck mite pesticides on him. if we do a bath, we are going to buy a heat lamp from a tractor supply to attach to the duck house to keep him warm at night. (around 45 degrees tonight in South Carolina). if all of that fails, he will most likely have to be put down because of his age and declining health.

does anyone know why this is caused?
how to help him?
how to keep him safe around the heat lamp?

update: I caught him and looked. he has TONS of maggots. according to google, he could not be clean enough, with excessive poop, or had a hidden wound. I believe he has all of it. I'm scared to death of losing him.... how the heck do we clean maggots out?

Can you get a photo of the affected area?

How is he doing?
He has fly strike.
You need to wash the wound and pick all of the maggots off.
I think you can use saltwater to kill the maggots.
Could you get a picture?

Hi, thanks for your support. We had him put down. He was not able to walk and was not able to hold his head up on his own. It was bloodworms up to his neck. You could see his skin, it was extremely infected. Rip 🌈
