Lethargic, dull comb, smelly vent, 'wobbly' hen.........

Let me know how it goes! My hen is eating just fine so I am not too worried. Ok, maybe just a LOT worried.

Well........... I'm sad to say that she didn't make it.
My husband went out to get me some gloves since we had run out, so I could manually check her vent.
She gave up even pecking at food and wasn't drinking any water she was offered. So, I had my DH
then take me to the pet store. I read a few threads here about tube feeding and was going to try THAT
after I checked her vent. By the time we got back from the pet store and I was ready to go with everything
to check the vent, wash it out, and tube feed, she was flopped on to her side w/her eyes closed. She opened
them up a bit when I picked her up. I just put a towel around her, petted her, and told her it was okay. I held, petted and talked to her until she felt a bit cool and no longer opened her eyes. I'm sad, but not AS sad as I usually am........especially with the ones I have raised since they were babies. I now need to decide if I want to send her off somewhere for a necropsy (sp?) or just bury her here. This is always sad for me. I sure wish I was completely back on MY feet and had caught this sooner. Perhaps there would have been a different outcome for her. :-(

Oh and I DID check up her vent.
Did NOT feel an egg or anything else. Did not see any worms.
She did have SUPER foul, smelly, brown liquid come out though.
Anyone know what might cause this? I'm thinking she had some sort
of internal infection that I just did NOT catch in time. Trying not to worry
about my other gals, at this point.

Send her for a necropsy so you will know what happened and that you will also know if your flock Is at risk. Put her in the fridge, NOT the freezer. You may be able to get it done, depends where you live.

I am so sorry for your loss. Hugs.

Also deworm all your birds with Safeguard, you will not know for sure if they are free of worms unless you take as sample to the vet, also treat for mites.

Wish I had read your post before I posted my own. I just went thru something similar to this with my hen, Nancy. Were your hens molting by chance? I did read on a site that some hens aren't as healthy to go thru the molt, that it takes too much out of them. Starting to wonder if that's what was wrong with my girl.

I am so sorry! It is so sad to lose them! I think your hen had Cocci. I just found out my hen had Cocci and am treating her with Corid. You shoud get some of this and give it to the rest of the flock, just to be sure. Does anyone have advice on how to take care of Cocci?

I would try to get the necropsy done by getting in touch with your state vet, and shipping her refrigerated body. She could have had coccidiosis, Mareks disease, egg yolk peritonitis, or a number of things. Coccidiosis is easy to treat (and won't harm) with Corid (amprollium) 1 tsp powder or 2 tsp of liquid per gallon of water for 5 days--treat the whole flock. Symptoms of coccidiosis are lethargy, poor appetite, puffing up, pale color, diarrhea (sometimes, but not always blood in the stool.) Be sure and pick up your other chickens off the roost at night, and feel them to check for any weight loss. Worming with SafeGuard or Valbazen, and checking them all for lice and mites would be good to do. Sorry for your loss. Here is a link to your state vet: http://www.azda.gov/ASD/asd.aspx
