I am experiencing the same issue as you described. My issue began 4 days ago. One of our araucana chickens was just sitting on the floor looking pretty lethargic. On closer inspection we notice that her eyes were very droopy and could not hold her head up. We isolated her and fed her water and food using a dropper.

Over the next couple of days I hit the forums on backyardchickens to see if I could further narrow down the issue. During that time my wife and I continued to feed her. I found a forum where it explained that she may be egg bound. I treated her by using a bucket and poured hot steam water and held her over it. In 20 minutes or so she was able to expel the egg. It was pasty and thick.

I expected for her to recover faster but the next day she still remained in the same state. She did start sneezing and on further reading I came to the conclusion that she may have a respiratory infection. I found another forum on backyardchickens where they recommend using Tylan 50 antibiotics to treat the chicken. 1/2 cc for 5 days. Today was her second does and let me tell you that she is more aware and I no longer have to open her beak to feed her water and food. She takes it on her own. She fluffs her feathers but is not walking yet but does move around in her kennel.

The issue is that this morning when I went to open the coops one of my more active hens jumped out and immediately sat down. she would walk for a bit and sit down.

My conclusion: because we have been treating the first hen I believe that I introduced the infection to the other hens. I would wash my hands and all that good stuff but the fact is that we are dealing with an organism that is so small that I am not treating all my hens with Tylan 50 to eliminate the infection all together and not continue to batter this issue and have it get out of control. I have a total of 9. One of them is on her second dose and is doing much better and the other 8 are on their first dose.

Tylan 50 - I purchased at the feed store. Two ways to administer - injection (breast and butt - dose and frequency???) I opted to use the oral method of 1/2 cc for 5 days.

Comes in two forms - powder or liquid. The powder you mix with water and the liquid you need a syringe to get the antibiotic out of the vial. I have a syringe that comes apart which then turns into a dropper) if I remember correctly the injections works faster.

I will keep updating this threat as more events develop.

You didn't say if she was eating or drinking but from the sounds of it, she isn't. I would see if you could mix up some ACV in water and either use a dropper or your finger to put it on her beak and see if she will take it in and swallow. For this I would try 1 tsp. to 2 cups of warm water. A tiny bit of honey or molasses could be given to make it taste better but tiny amount is the key.

I have read on a couple of threads on BYC where they have made the chicken throw up to empty the crop. I've never done it so cannot advise on that. I'm so sorry I can't be more help!

Up date on very sick hen . She has had 3 doses of fish zole for possible black head gave her lots of vitamins and immuno charge. She has perked up some now and her poop is not as runny. She is still very sick should i finish the fish zole then give valbazen or go another route. She cant stand or walk why could it be she is not getting any nutrition from her food because of worms or maybe mites idk what to do i hate to put her down if there is any hope.her comb is also pale and drinks all the time. What woudmake her not to walk please help out of options thanks

Can you post some pictures? There may be something that will be caught if everyone can 'see'. I am going to ask another BYC member to check this thread, but pictures would really help a lot.

Please answer these questions for us:
  • What made you think she had Histomoniais (blackhead)?
  • Why did you start her on fish-zole?
  • How much fish-zole have you been giving her?
  • Did she stop walking after you started the fish-zole?
  • Do you have Valbazen?
  • Is she inside where it's warm?
  • How much does she weigh?
