Lethargic Rooster - help!

His crop feels empty and definitely no smell coming from his beak area. I picked up some Poultry Nutri-Drench and plan on giving him a rapid dose.

I just saw my hen go near his vent and peck at it a little bit. I’ve never seen her do this. What would cause her to do that to him?

I would also suggest isolating him and putting him into a dog kennel or something similar, put some napkins or old towel, not shaving on the floor of it, see if he poops. Put a little bowl of water, no food. See if his crop empties overnight, in the morning you should see poop and the crop should be completely empty. Depending on how clogged/infected crop is there are different ways on dealing with it. Let us know when you get home and check his crop, smell from his beak?

Check his vent very thouroughly. Also, get a picture of his poop and share if you can. Vent picking occurs when the skin around and inside the vent is damaged or red and inflammed. Can you also get a picture of his vent?

Fairly certain this is his poop. I’ll try to get a picture of his vent when my husband gets home. Definitely a two person job.

No worries, Can you try picking one of the hens at the end of the day, she should have a sizeable "bag" where chest is. that "bag" should be empty in the morning. Was it empty in your rooster? It is hard to say by poop whats wrong. I would suggest isolating him, there are dog cages on craigslist that I'd suggest you pick up for quarantine situations like that. Also buy Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens and read it, its a very easy to read and follow book with plenty of illustrations and great info in it. I've learned A LOT by reading it a few times.
