Yesterday we noticed that our 3-year-old plymouth barred rock was lying around on her side and not acting like herself. She didn't get up when my husband shooed her into her run and he had to push her to get her up (at which point she stood up and went in). We thought she was just being lazy but have kept an eye on her today. Today we've noticed limping and some stumbling. Her bottom is very red, but she's molting and it always looks red when she molts so I'm not sure if that's related. We picked her up to examine her and one of her legs seems sensitive, although we can't find any marks. This is the first time in 3 years that we've had any injuries or illnesses in our little flock of 4. She seems to be laying (we hadn't checked the egg box in a couple days, but it had some of her eggs when we checked.) Any suggestions as to what's happening?

She could be weak or dehydrated from summer heat or an illness. I would place her in a basket or wire dog crate with food and water, and if you think she is hot, you can first try to cool her legs with cool water. Give her fluids, and if electrolytes, pedialyte, or gatorade is available, that would be good. Feel of her for weight loss, check her crop to feel if it is empty, full, hard, or puffy. Look her vent area over for any diarrhea, mites, and lice which can run around under the vent. Note what her poops look like, and if possible, take in a few fresh droppings to a local vet for a test for worms and coccidiosis on the next business day. Check her legs for injury, swelling, and to make sure that she can move her legs and toes. Offer her some chopped egg and some watery chicken feed if she will take it.

She's definitely hurt her leg. I've got her confined now inside, and she's lying on her side with her right leg curled up and shaking. She can move her leg and toes when I checked it though. Poop looked normal, and I didn't see anything near her vent.

Their water in their run is up high so that they don't kick it over - I am wondering if she hurt her leg and then couldn't jump up to drink for who knows how long and now is super dehydrated. She has fresh water with her now but she's not drinking it, and not eating the lettuce I gave her. Unfortunately I can't get her to a vet until tomorrow at earliest since it's Sunday. Any advice on getting her to drink?
