Let's have a gosling hatchalong!

Goslings are so much fun!!

Christine, my guys laid a full second clutch of eggs after a brief "pause" of a couple of weeks last year as well as this year. And then you always have one that just won't quit.

I'm a little jealous of your HWF Americans. I only have the one lavender gander now. I just needed to devote my resources to the sebbies, but I sure loved the blue American pair I had. They were gorgeous and really made the curlies shine with their smooth beauty.

Iain, you can always see updated pics on the blog. The link is in my sig!! Do you have a buff yet?? I'm still hopeful too for a grey sb or buff with my last eggs. I need Alex to put some curls on a chunky kid built like Paige *lol*

Zooweemama, I was wondering the same thing?? I think your "hatchery" geese are just beautiful. You can always try to breed up if you want to strive toward the correct weight and type the SOP shows. But what's wrong with having beautiful pets? The majority of my seb flock was not used to breed from this year. I LOVE them, but I want curlier colors, not color with bad form and no curls. So I'm sure this will be a multi year effort, but maybe one day

6 geese hatched as of this morning, and 2 Ancona ducks are also in the brooder.

Now there's only about 14 more goose eggs and 18 more duck eggs to go. The geese are on day 30, the ducks are on day 28. I'm thinking one is late, while the other is early. But, not being a bird, I don't know what kind of watches they are given when they start in the egg. I'm guessing quartz timing.

I'll have to post pics of the geese so y'all can tell me which are which.

As for so many saying the season is over, do geese really lay that few eggs for that short of time? I was thinking of hatching some more over the summer, but not having any adult birds myself, I'm not sure how it all works with geese.

After reading up on Ancona ducks, it looks like I should find some unrelated and do my part to propagate the breed. Seems like there's not so many of them in the world.

lol..."ONLY about 14 more"!

Geese generally lay once a year...this time of year! That was obvious huh? They can lay a second clutch if you're really lucky, unlike me! I have seen a few people offer eggs for sale closer to the summer months but geese are usually done by May...maybe early June? I don't know...anyone else familiar with late layers???

On day 29 now for the 4 sebbie gosling eggs. Last night was candling them and was talking to the eggs and one talked back to me, peep peep peep. That tickled me. But only 3 of the 4 are rocking. But still keeping the one in the bator just in case it is a slow one. No one has externally pipped yet. Wait on that.

This hatch is one i have been waiting for a couple years. Gloria our grey curly has never had fertile eggs because she had trouble for several years with soft or uneven egg shells. This year her eggs have nice form to them and good shells. If the two in this hatch makes it this will be our first goslings from Gloria.

Congrats on the embdens, good luck with the sebbie, and very sorry about the dewlaps not being fertile this year. How's things going otherwise?

Beautiful!!! Do you think the gosling RG hatched will be the grey splash or buff??? It came from a white female, but the gander could be either brown or brown/white cross. Not sure as they are in a group and quite frankly, I thought she was primarily paired with my white gander. Her 1st gosling (dead in shell) was white.

I'm very happy they are doing so well for you! Congrats!!!

But I'll be so jealous if you get a 2nd girl when I'm hatching all the boys from Slate & Shimmer.............

Stunning! I never get tired of seeing pics of your geese (and other pets)!

My husband's very favorite bird is our hatchery African gander. We have all kinds of geese from cross-bred barnyard to high end quality dewlap Toulouse. They are all wonderful. Your pair are lovely and I totally get what you are saying about Africans not living up to they so-called reputation. Our Africans are much nicer as a whole towards everyone during breeding season that my dewlaps. I love their personalities!
We find the Africans perfectly lovely. We love their chattiness. They can get sassy from time to time- but we're all pretty assertive so it's not really a problem. Mostly the gander but even then he is no where anything remotely resembling aggressive or nasty. I would to add a dewlapped African honestly. My hubby prefers the hatchery African look, I prefer the more correct type with the heavier bodies and dewlaps...but I still love my girlie hatchery goose to pieces.
I just LOVE your place! You guys come up with some of the BEST ideas!!!

Seriously look at that set up! AWEsome!

I totally agree. They are perfectly lovely pets and that is really the main reason we got the geese. Pets. Not food, not eggs, not breed and sell...just pure appreciation. And that we do. :D I'd love to add a white African or maybe a Buff to round out a trio. I might be able to do that soon too. :D

My last egg in the bator has externally pipped. The other 2 are doing great and Dixie has calmed down cause she can see and hear her new siblings. I hope the last baby is healthy and energetic like its 2 hatch buddies.
