Well , internet went down for 2.5 days again. (Windstream , sheeesh). So I couldn't ask for help. I got one African baby from my not quite 1 yr old Super Africans pair from Holderreads. The other 4 eggs never pipped. This was from group 2. (I have groups 3, 4, staggered in incubator). He pipped day after Sheltand female hatched. But other than zipping about an inch in 24 hr., then no progress for 24 hours, and his peeps were weakening, I started to open an air hole, no blood, membrane white. He seemed unable to zip, like he was too big for egg, this may be related to the humidity being too high (55-65% on the washed eggs--both duck and goose). My Dutch Hookbills seemed to dehydrate alot more than the silky ducks or the goose eggs. I'd say , the shells seemed denser. (Beginning to think each species needs their own hatcher).I left African baby alone again to rest and not force hatch, by next day I figured help, cause I was probably going to lose him anyway. (the other one I helped, was too early, I'd thought it dead and uncapped it too soon, even with lhelp , it died). He pushed out of clean egg. I had to wash him in warm water as his eye/head was plastered with yolk and paper towel.-Returned him to incubator for a day,and by evening he was peeping and other eggs I suspected were dead. He got put with other gosling and ducks. (stinker silky baby attacked him, 2 days old and already fierce

. Other eggs dead , no pipping.
(So I got two and if I can google how to post iphone pics I will.)
I used a damaged Hovabator for a Hatcher. Has some compression, and cracks taped up. I think I may have to chuck it. It may be the cause of part of the problem. Humidity was 75-87%. But temps seemed to drop to 99, even 97, don't know why, even with it closed up. I did finally put some foam in the compressed side and it seemed to help. I had water jars for thermal mass.... So my hatch of group 2 was about 20-25%. Not very good. All made it to last couple days. Some of the ducks had internally and externally pipped. I just wonder if the hatchlings who were knocking around, and then me taking them out once a day caused some of it. (they even chipped an inch off an egg!)
I don't think the Hovabators are holding temps well, unless the room is exactly the same temp. According to may records , ti was stable when the house temp was really stable like 2 degrees . I have groups 3 and 4 with some goose eggs and Runners in the other incubator, but have gotten some 104 spikes 3 times in last couple days (at top of eggs). This one I kept the humidity down in the 40's (pretty much house humidity, this is Ga.)
I think I might need to try an incubator with a fan...thinking it may keep it more stable....or maybe build one, it just seems as if the ones I have may not be as stable as one with a fan???????? Any thoughts? welcome.

UM ..... A Little Help here ???!!!!????
(yes I went out & found my Pot Belly Pig Like this!)

Here are all my youngest babies. The top and bottom left are the Sebbies and the others are the Americans. I asked over on the Seb gosling thread about down color, but I think Celtic answered that question. That bottom left gosling is so dark! It's a little hard to see in the pic, but she's way darker than my others.

I need baby goslings like yesterday! My lone African egg should be hatching around Monday. For now I wait for a pip. I'm sad that it's only 1 but we saved back 2 ducklings from our last hatch just in case. We have 1 more egg from another batch I set (what is it with only 1 egg veining??) due in about 15 days. Quite staggered but if they both hatch- hopefully I can integrate them with each other so they have each other before we then integrate them with the main flock.

Zoowee im having problems with eggs also. I set 23 eggs in the bator 10 days ago and 1 egg under a chicken. The one under the chicken wasnt any good and about 14 out of the bator batch isnt any good. Unless it was stress due to transport from when i bought the new geese then i dont know what happened. I know that they are not sterile geese, because i do have 1 or 2 eggs from each of the 5 geese that is forming. Who knows... I have 10 more to try and then im done for the season.
