Lets hear it for the LADIES who build their own coops!

I am not building mine

... helping now. I told DH I was going out to start building the chicken coop, while he was working on putting new floors in (he had plenty of help). But I could tell his feelings were hurt. So I waited till he could work on it. I bought a huge dog house off craigslist that had cool cedar shake siding, I tore the whole thing apart (it was rotting really bad) and saved the siding and some of the useable wood. Then I designed the new coop, and am letting dh build it to make him feel better. I have not uploaded pics, but as soon as I do I will post them. All the wood that we have used is salvaged from DH's construction job site, with some things we have laying around.

I couldn't do it all by myself... not enough hands. Hubby was my wonderful assistant in all things construction. But he knows how much I love playing with power tools, so he let me do a lot of the construction, and I worked on it a lot when he wasn't there.

I didn't quite get all the runs completed on one side before the snow shut me down...

Runs are covered with gill-nets to keep larger predators out and the birds in. I hope to get them covered before next winter to keep the runs clear of snow.
8 pens inside, some split vertically for quail above the silkies. Would have been 10 pens, but I took 2 to make a completed room that is supposed to be a brooder room, but right now it's just storage. (The garage is my brooder...

It's still a work in progress, but I see it being done this year.

We are building it out of pallets for the 'bones' of the structure. It is going to be 20x16. One end will have a 4x8 storage room and a 4x8 isolation/breeding pen. The front will be solid on the bottom half and screen on top for very good ventilation in our heat. We will have some fold down covers for the screen parts. We also have some windows left from when the one's were replaced on the house. My idea is to have them open from the outside with the screening inside the windows. The run is going to be 20x15 on the main part. Haven't decided how big a run to put on the separation pen. Lots of fun but ready to have it done. My babies are getting big, need there house done!! Oh yeah, I want to install those PVC feeders but somehow work them so I can fill them straight from the storage room into both pens. We'll see how I can work that one out. Wish I could find siding like Mrs AK Bird Brain used. No saw mills here though.

I build my chicken coop by myself along with the assistant of my mom. It's nothing that will win the cover of a magizine but enough for the chicken to have somewhere to call home. Have a lil' more work to do, but it's been raining so much here in NC. Hope to finish soon. Also uses all scratch wood. Mrs AK Bird Brain I love your house. What are the upside down plastic bottles used for?

Bummer no saw mills... that stuff is called "flitching" or "flitch" and it's the first or second cut when they make boards so it still has some of the bark on it. It was WAY cheaper than buying plywood, too.

The windows we got off Craigslist for $25/each... they're double paned and soundproof.

The doors were free off of Freecycle.
