I think a lot of these old methods were used because they never had any other way to even guess at the sex of their birds.

I would not be so quick to laugh them off, but as another poster said, if they were that accurate, the hatcheries would not pay for professional sexers.

Be glad you aren't raising parrots. A lot of parrots need to be sexed by blood tests or even exploratory surgery!
 
Hmm sounds like a good experiament. I will try it on my new chicks to see what happens. I have worked with a pedulum before and now how it work and how Not to influance it. One can get the right answer if one knows the answer but it is hard to get one if one does not. There is a trick to it and it is all about hand steadiness and not moving your hand or arm. Since I will not know the sex of my chicks perse it will be a good experiament. My chicks get here wed. I hope.
