i've been obsessed with making a new breed latly, and i need some help because i don't have chickens yet. i want to make a breed that at least can have that color gene that seramas have that makes them any color, so, i need some help planning, got any ideas where to start?

I think you need to start with getting some chicks and learning the basics of raising them....then you can start learning how to make a new breed...which takes many generations and hard culling of birds that don't fit your final plan.

They are called mutts, go to a swap meet, they are everywhere. A breed must breed true and not just any color or conformation. Define what you want to breed, go for it. If no one but you likes it, who cares, you are paying bills, they are your bantams, go for it.

I'm working with a White Silkie roo and two barred OEGBs right now. So far all of the chicks (only three eggs I've incubated- none have hatched) have been black or blue with Silkie feet. I'm putting more under my Silkie in a few days.

I don't really understand this..... mutts are fine but working on breeding the bests of a breed and working on something seems so much more of a goal, I think people just want to breed willy nilly and get a rainbow becuase it's so easy.. and getting to call it their own. but this will never be a breed.

It's never going to happen unless your willing to spend a life time on it.

I have bantam easter eggers, they are pretty much what you want!

mine lay wonderful! so they are useful, and I use them as broody hens for hatching out others eggs. they come in all colors, a really fun bird and your not just making more mutts but something that is marketable and people want so you will have a easyier time getting rid of your culls.

And getting rid of a Large number of birds is what goes into making a breed.. you will probably only get something worth keeping out of every 1,000 birds if your lucky. and if your really trying to start a new breed.

So try for some easter eggers that have feathered legs.

Look into the blue egg genes as I think that would be be a easy place to start understanding genes and see what you need.

I would not mind having some easter eggers with feathered legs.

I agree with Katy. If you want some thing you made your self, then start out with mutts.....etc... there are already breeds that meet your desires.

I love my mixed-bred birds. This little hen had a Silkie mother and a Serama father. She's very tiny and has lightly feathered legs, a small crest, unusual coloring and hasn't started laying yet. I'm hoping she'll be a really good broody hen one day.

Here's a picture of her brother, but he died:

They came about because their mother went broody AGAIN and she was sitting on a few of her own eggs and I just said, "Fine, keep them. I don't care."

Once they started growing, it was obvious to me which rooster sired them. I don't have plans to create a breed, but I think these guys are just adorable.

If you'd like to work on a breeding project - you have fun with it! It's a lot of work to get a new breed established, a lot of red tape and marketing to the public, but if that's what you'd really like to do, then do it.
