Let's make the newbies feel better by.....

I myself am new to chick raising and I have had two shipments of chicks, no DOA's! First on February 16th had 10 plus 10 packing peanuts, all arrive happy, healthy, and alert. The second shipment March 15th had 7 bantams and a guinea keet! No heat pack, just extra packing fluff and grow gel. All arrive happy, healthy, and alert. And all are still doing great. I also picked up several from TSC, after an hour drive home, with the heat on all did great. With my first shipment I prepared myself for the worse, and the opposite happened.

We ordered from Murray McMurray last year. 36 arrived last July and we still have all 36- they're running around on the property right now as I type.

Two successful batches raised by (surrogate) mama cochins! Now it's my turn, and I hope I do as well! 2 SS feedstore chicks to practice on before my "fancy" chicks arrive the end of the week...

After two days one of them is already jumping up into my hand to get the crushed starter I hand down to them fot a treat... PUt a branch and a hunk of grass with dirt in for them as well as Med crumble and water--they love picking at the dirt and grass! I figured that mama cochin lets them do the same, pretty much...

Out of 26 total (2 rehomed) and starting brand spanking new last Oct... all chicks from different batches at different times - no issues!

All are healthy, no injuries... even when the bulb broke, when the power went off, when I came home to find their waterer tipped over and bone dry for who knows how long... when they moved to the coop...

I'm really sorry for those that have had issues, and I'm not saying I never will, but you just have to do your best and hope for a positive outcome.

I've raised chickens, ducks, turkeys, pheasants, quail and never lost one as a chick for 15 years. I keep them warm, clean and fed with fresh food and water several times a day. Once they start free ranging, it's a whole different story. Dogs have been the number 1 predator (strays, neighbours....)

Thank you so much for this thread!! I am getting my first batch of chicks on Thursday and I am scared that I will mess up or that some will die. I only ordered 4, because we have limited space, but then I was second guessing whether I should have ordered more. I still might get an extra one if they have some available, but now I feel much better.

I got all of my 11 at an IFA COuntry Store and all are alive and well, ranging from 2 weeks to 4 weeks. My first flock so I am glad I have not lost any... SOrry to those that have, I would have been devistated if I had.

I think the thread is a good idea. I've already lost one, but the thread doesn't make me feel bad about it. It was a stupid mistake on my part (didn't realize the door wasn't latching properly, and my dog got in while my daughter had a chick out), and I feel guilty about it, but not because of this thread.

We started with some older babies (2 weeks old) to sort of dip our toe, and are getting some day olds in the next week or so. I'm a little nervous about those ones, but hopeful that we'll do okay by them.
