Let's plan a Quail egg hatch... set 'em Sept. 1, hatch 'em Sept 17-19+

We have a livestock auction about 15 minutes away every week

How do you do at the auction, Shelley? I am thinking about using the auction near us as a backup in case we have overflow

nothings white or pied, not eve stray white feathers, there are jumbo goldens (speckled sort), and there are British Range...

there is a very slight chance it is from the weird golden that i hatched, but it would be a jumbo brown male. I can't remember if she was laying at that point or not?

The yellow ones with the black stripe i think are goldens yes? the other 2 british range? is the reddish one a rosetta and the darker a tibetan?
thanks

Just Because You Dont Have Any Birds "expressing" The Pied Gene Does Not Mean It Isnt There "hiding"...either That Or Those Are The Milk Quail's Kids...

lol, I dont get that last bit lol, could it be some quirk on the goldens? I guess time will tell but i'm so not patient lol

It's like buttons, some bird is carrying a gene and passes it on to the offspring

It happens. But coturnix are so darn cute you want to smush their little cheeks together and give them a big kiss.

I would love to join in, because heaven knows I will need the help. I am getting some buttons..either tomorrow or Wed. Will set the next day after getting them..already wondering the best way to incubate? I usually just set my chicken eggs on their side, turn myself three times a day. I am only setting 20. Hope I get some to hatch, but it will be before Sept. 1.

It's like red hair in people. It's a recessive gene, so you may not see white in your birds (phenotype) but in there genotype you have 2 carriers of a pied gene. The other colors "paint over" the white so you won't see it expressed unless you mate and see it expressed in the offspring. Now back in the 50's when recessive genes weren't so understood, a child with the wrong eye/hair color was accused of being the milkman's kid (because milkmen would go door to door while the husbands are at work, it's an euphisim for jerk).
