They were real ones.
This was years after the counterfeits were being dealt with (*which I was too young to know about at that time, but my mom checked them before letting me pick one)

Plus, fairs and situations like that, vendors need to sign up and be inspected. It would look very bad if they let counterfeits in and got found out.

I have a bin of them, untouched since I bought them while carrying DS - two+ decades ago. And yes, some of them ARE worth money - three to five dollars apiece. What an investment!
