This coop has an addition to it,my wife bought some plastic mesh to go around the front to prevent the ducks from sticking their heads thru the slots and eating the grass.

I got my pallets from a news paper company, I have a foot in the door so they'd pile them up for me and I'd pick them up on the weekends. Otherwise they just put them outside for people to take.

How about a pallet mansion???

So it's more like 1/2 pallets, but the other two walls and the platform are constructed with wood salvaged from a remodel job. Sadly I had to buy some plywood for the floor and the trusses but we saved quite a bit of $$$ by going mostly recycled! It's kinda ugly right now but if it turns out as I have it pictured in my mind it will be quite beautiful in the next few weeks

Especially since I just scored a 5 gallon bucket of tastefully colored exterior paint for $25 in the mis-tint section at Lowes (discounted from $166

the coop isnt ugly, its oldskool-like what everyone used to have years ago,be proud of it!
our last chicken run was like that, except they had a coop and small caged off run inside, and netting over the entire top, with plastic covering over the coop end of it,we never had one fox problem.

-but when we upgraded to a modern omlet eglu coop and large run which are the front line of 'fox proof' housing,we lost all but one of our hens to a mothering vixen, says a lot about modern hardware doesnt it?

if an oldskool coop/run does the job,it keeps the chucks safe from predators and is a stable, safe and warm chuck mannor, they are living the high life.

try freecycle, have just had a google and there are various groups in central florida.
just google 'freecyle name of florida state are living in' and that shoud bring up the local freecycle group or just search freecycle under central florida.

freecycle is a bit like craigslist except it is highly moderated by the group owners and was created only for people to pass on things they dont want anymore to avoid useable things going to dumps/wasteland.
people can make 'wanted' posts on it,to ask for things,or 'offered' things if they have anything they dont want anymore.
its well worth a try for getting hold of pallets or other un needed wood.

freecycle groups differ in their joining criteria, usualy they have to be moderator approved and some of them do ask on the online form why the user wants to join, they like people to write what they want to hear as opposed to the most common reason-they are looking for something free to get hold of.
they need to hear that are hoping to give away some unwanted stuff and also woud like to rehome stuff that woud otherwise be dumped....that sort of thing.
-some of their groups have a minimum amount of give aways required before allowing a wanted post to be put up.

our local freecycle was ridiculously strict, was assumed to be a child due to grammar/language, and refused membership, however used to look at the group through sisters account, they had some incredible stuff on offer.

Here is our "Poultry Pallet Pallace":

52004_sunp0085.jpg

Its 12'x20'x7' high with a coop inside thats 8'x8'x7'high. cost to build = 100.00 at best (screws, used vinyl billboard roof, hinges, etc).

The small coop in the front is a grow-out coop for chicks until they become ugly teens, then get thrown with the mix in the big coop.

The roof is sagging a bit now,so since we have some metal roofing company here that sells their "leftovers" at .99cents a linear foot,we are going to make a tin roof on plyboard.

Hey gmendoza, back in February of this year when you posted your pallet coop pics, what is your opinion on how your pallet coops have held up 7 months later. Is the wood still doing ok? Any signs of any problems with the pallet wood?

I was looking at my pallet coop/aviary for my peacocks and it's still holding up. I was just curious to how others' pallet coops are doing.

Peacock Aviary made from FREE pallets. Total cost to build was $38.00 (sand and 2 plants).

You may want to try the following places and see if they have any FREE pallets: It's where I get all of freebies.

1. Glass Companies
2. Farm Implement Stores
3. Paint Stores
4. Hardware Stores
5. Car dealerships (They have shipping crates. Makes great "mini" houses for animals)
6. Furniture Stores
7. Craigslist has FREE pallet giveaways

Good Luck.

In addition to the above:
Appliance centers
Motorcycle shops
Air conditioner shops
Furniture stores
Exercise equipment stores and gyms

I recently found an armored car maker that had some really cool crates

I know there is at least one business in Fla that makes flooring from pallets so you may have competition but

I'll have to add those to my list. Thanks for sharing.
