Lets talk about goats!

Oh my those are adorable!! Congratulations! :weee Been reading this thread in case I decide to get goats in future and just had to jump in and say that... Loving all the goat pics and especially the babies - but may just have to leave the goat keeping to you all :)

Thank you, only a week old and it already seems like they're growing up fast! They're both male and still need names.

I would love to help name them!

Hello fellow bycers! I don't own any goats but I love them & I milk goats for a friend so I would love to talk goats with you guys!

An update, my mom came up with the name "Nero" for the black & white kid, but we couldn't think of another Greek/Roman name for his brother so I would love suggestions!

They're very playful now and when I visited Nero yesterday he just loved to stand on me, "nurse" my fingers, and tried his hardest to push my leg. :D

Question for those who have castrated kids using the banding method...at what age is it first appropriate to do this? A source my mom read said castration should be done at age 4-6 months to minimize risk of urethra/bladderstone problems if they're done too young, but I'm wondering if it can be done earlier than this.

Can I play with the naming? I love names... here are a few suggestions, since I'm not sure what inspires you with regard to names:

If going with Greek and color, Kafe (with an accent over the e so it sounds like kaFE) is the Greek word for brown and he is a lovely brown. Russo could work too, but not sure if that is Greek or Italian...

Here are some other ancient Greek names that caught my eye:

Apollo - strength
Doro-gift
Theo - god
Brontes- thunderer
Echo - well, echo
Jason- to heal
Linus - flax
Midas- the king who was cursed with everything he touched turned to gold
Themis- law of nature, divine law
Xanthe- yellow, fair hair (though this sounds more feminine to me)
Zeus - we all know who he is, though this may be better suited to a non-castrated male?

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for those suggestions, I'm really liking the idea of Russo for him but I'll pass 'em all along to mom! Nero and Russo sounds nice.

Question: We have a wether that is approximately 4 years old. Recently I heard what I thought was his hooves clicking together as he walked. I just assumed he needed a hoof trim. I let it go for a bit because I was going to deal with it when I could trim several goats at one time. But when I did go to do the trimming, I picked up his foot and it was his knee that was making the noise. Both of his front knees make that noise. He does not appear to be suffering from any discomfort at all. Is this early signs of arthritis or some other ligament ailment? Any thoughts on this?

Unless it gets worse or he shows signs of pain, we're going to wait until the vet comes back to the farm for the next visit and let him take a look.
