Let's talk Cuckoo and WHITE marans... breeding strategies...

A Marans with a side sprig or white earlobes should not win anything....it should be DQ'd.......maybe the earlobes were only partially white.

Yeah that was a big discussion last Feb with the pics of the Marans that WON at Newnan with OBVIOUS DQ's. I don't remember which thread either Black Copper or just the Marans... I think the Marans. I think it was MathAce that put the pics up. Very disappointing to see Marans win with DQ's.... and I then saw them advertised here local on CL that they won....

People were surely clamoring to buy SHOW WINNING eggs and chicks.

OK I got a picture of my Cuckoo Roo on my phone. He is still young but his tail looks like it is growing in and is going to be nice. He is a CHUNK too big all over and heavy

@Philadelphia: These particular cuckoos came from Chickielady here on byc. She has had a line of feather shanked silver based Cuckoo Marans for 10 + years. She is honest and nice to deal with and said some of her males can get some gold leakage but I am not seeing it on any of mine or on the hens as of yet. I will be on the lookout, however, and cull out any that do. I have a black male I can use if I need to and might do some testing on my cuckoo hens with the black male and/or a blue male over the cuckoo hens but that is a longer process lol. I am just hoping at least one of my cuckoo males do not throw any gold leakage.
The silver birchens can sometimes come from matings of silver cuckoo x BCM or Blue coppers.
This site has a good explanation of where the silver and birchen come from (scroll way down the page) http://frenchmaransclubaustralia.yolasite.com/notes-on-breeding.php

@ Hensandroos..Thank you. How are your cuckoos doing?
Just to let you know, I DO NOT HAVE ANY GOLD LEAKAGE...what happens is the older cocks get a bit of straw coloration on neck & saddle hackles and this has been found due to sun damage...Darn it all...I guess if I want to show any, I keep them indoors until after the show.
Bev Davis also said that splash, white & Birchen birds can also have this happen, it is not color leakage, it is sun damage, evident after molting, the new hackle growing in is very white again.
The "straw" hackle is worn out.
None of my line has Gold Leakage, and no cock birds I have throw gold leakage.
Glad you saved some babies !
Let me know if you want more...for shipping

I had no idea you had such misery (flood, etc) !!

Very nice!
I've got a lone White Marans girl with street sweepers, would LOVE one of your boys to put with her! Wish you were closer.
Street sweepers !!!!!!!!!!!!! That is awesome !!

I just raised up a street sweeper boy:

*** Incidently, he does have 1 feather on each middle toe....as you can see.
He is a kick though !!

I was referring to the sale thread where you stated that your cuckoos had a straw type of tint to them and some of the pics of the roos had a little gold tint to their hackles. I wasn't try to ditz your cuckoos heck, I have them and am happy with them even if others aren't :D I think I may be able to use them for the project that I wanted them for.
Scroll down to where Soaring Chicks asked you about the gold.
