Let's talk Cuckoo and WHITE marans... breeding strategies...

Hi

Most golden cuckoo are a result of the cuckoo having been mated with a wheaten in the past. There is a gene that is called autosomal red and it appears that the wheaten carry this gene. When a wheaten is bred with a bird carrying silver the silver sometimes has the appearance of a straw color.

The feather of the cuckoo does change as the bird gets older and the feather does yellow a little and this should not be confused with the above. When the bird goes through the moult the new feather won't have the yellow effect which is caused by sun light.

What happened when u get gold leakage in a bird. Also can u have a bird with gold hackles that is not a Golden Cuckoo.
Gold leakage in a Reg Cuckoo is not good and should not be breed. I had Gold leakage in my cuckoos last year and I am HOPEFUL I have picked the right new breeders and the others that were causing the problem are GONE. I had many issues in my Cuckoos last year, lack of feathered legs, gold leakage and egg color. This year, so far no Gold leakage and everyone has feathered legs.... AND It looks like some egg color improvement

I also have some new cuckoos growing up from someone else, a couple actually, but I have to do some test matings to check a couple of things before they will go in the breeding pens. Still a few months down the road.....

Good Luck!

Does anyone have a photo of a splash cuckoo marans? I was reading on the French Marans Club of Australia, website and came across
this :
"The Splash Silver Cuckoo would be a nearly white bird, with the cuckoo pattern only visible on the odd coloured feather. It could possibly have ‘ghost barring’. I have never seen this colour pattern, genotype of the male being E/E S/S Ml/Ml Bl/Bl B/B Id/Id W/W Pti-1/Pti-1, and a hen E/E S/- Ml/Ml Bl/Bl B/- Id/- W/W Pti-1/Pti-1."

So this would have to come from blue cuckoo x blue cuckoo right? I'm tempted to make some just so I can see what a splash cuckoo would look like lol. I have seen some ghost barred birds before and they are pretty cool.

I have had 2

Current roo..... He is only carrying one copy of Cuckoo and I am using him to make Blue Marans. Lightly Feathered and he is bigger now. He also carries darker egg genes... so hoping to improve egg color too.

This is the First Splash Roo I had.... Much WHITER. The other guy above.... Vicki told me he was splash and she was right. I don't have him anymore... I didn't need a splash roo anymore. The only reason the other guy is sticking around is for solid BLUES

Sorry for any confusion that my last post may have caused. It was in reference to the beautiful White Marans pullet pictured in Post Number 1073. She is truely a beautiful White pullet. We would love to have her in our White Marans breeding program.

I got some of your Cuckoos.... with an order for Whites with Becky! Come join the fun!
I am not real computer literate. As you may be able to guess.I just commented on a pullet that was pictured three pages back.

I hope that you are pleased with your birds. We are right in the middle of show season here and can't stay ahead of the weather changes down here. We have had rain, cold temperatures, more rain, snow, and more cold temperatures. That is not normal for us. We are trying to get ready for the Bluebonnet Classic show in College Station next weekend. After that, it will be Ft Worth in a couple of weeks and then to Newnan, Gerogia in February. I hope and pray that our birds stay healthy though all of these weather changes.
