Let's talk Cuckoo and WHITE marans... breeding strategies...

I have white sports in my line.

Nice!! I like this bird, especially his comb. Chooks man, am I missing something?

Quote: Bwahahahaha! I could written this post myself. The genetics are confusing.

I got my White Marans eggs to the show in Texas, unfortunately they were the only White Entry as far as I can tell. ~ they took first place, but I'm seeing it as a 'Thanks for Participating' award. I need to maybe talk to someone who was there and get their opinion on how our eggs looked.

Good day you guys in the US.
yeah your flock is throwing about 18% white chicks .
now you need to separate the 2 varieties. to do that is easy .1)breed the white to the white to get a pure white ( like the one I posted from the show. they come from a cuckoo marans)
2) you need to single mate your hen to your rooster to catch the hen ho is responsible for this white chicks
I think I have "the hen" singled out already, a bit more "silver" her neck cape...but we'll see...
And yes we'll be keeping the whites in a pen of their own.
The hardest part will be to talk DH into building "Just One more coop.I promise !"

First place or Best in Breed ?

The reason why I ask is that (at least here) there is rarely ANY coloration of Marans shown, let alone a white.
MAYBE, just MAYBE you'll see a few BCM shown here.
There is a few Silver Cuckoo Breeders, none from my line though, but out here you're more sooner to see a pig fly than a few colorations of the Marans breed.
Maybe this fall I will show some...it will be not too far from us here.
Trouble is last year they went to a 2 day event, so we'd have to be there at 8 AM, coop in, fiddle fart around and judging stops at NOON, resumes the following day at 8 AM, awards, then the big hoopla...and clean up by 3 PM...we'd have to drive back every night to deal with the birds/dogs/cats here, and sleep...and dive back, being about 2 1/2 tanks of gas...$$$$$$$$$$$$$

White chicks coming out of the Silver cuckoo line is a good thing. because they are silver bassed rather than golden bassed bird. So they are going to be pure white.
yeah your line carry the white gene as recessive C/c+.

your 2end Silver cuckoo roster is stunning nice type ,nice tail( shape and angle) light colored feet need more feathers.the back of his comb could be a little tidy .

how many white chicks you end up with?
I am still not cheering my good luck...I don't trust my good luck at all....................I keep thinking I'll have folks hatching eggs and 3 mo later have them calling for their money back when the cockerels grow out golden hackle...or some such incident...almost want to take them off the market until I can grow out a few & watch type.

Nice eggs color .don t be turn off because the show.
you have very nice eggs color for the White strain. because the white strain where bread for meat ( white skin and fat ) not for eggs color.
white marans strain with eggs color 5 and white skin and fat is actually better then the one they lay darker and have a yellew skin and fat. ( From the french them selves. in the year 2011 the white marans was placed the 1 st for here meat . she manage to beat the famous french breeds .la Breasse and la Fleche ).

about the silver cuckoo rooster? not the best picture we can t see his poster properly ,but he seem to me he got short back. he s dark B/b+ not B/B ( double factor ), his tail squereil type, his body shape is triangle type we need Rectangle body type.

the problem with the back if is short and not flat will push tail angle ( high tail angle )
if the Back is long and flat than the tail will be in the right angle.

his comb is nice could be a little well shaped in the front but still good, end well clear fron the head and nek that good.

take another shot of him.

I like the second rooster he s almost parfect.

Chickielady that good you single out the hen responsible for the white chicks.

if you are happy with her as type and eggs color ( than send t to Australia I ll be very happy to have her, ha haaaaaaaa) than breed her back to one of her White son , you will get White poulets 100% with they mom quality , and 50 % each white/ cuckoo cockerels.

that is a good one telling him is the last coop .promise . yeah yeah the last one. no body believe t. No body believe s the chocks people we all started with a few chicks and we said that all what I m having .I can t have more No way to much work. I kind like them. than few years in the line we end up with coops and more coops, more runs ,this variety and that breed. we can t stop. we have to admit t.

we like our chocks and we want to have more is not a crime.
