How do you cull? I've been raising the excess roosters and killing for food, but feeding alot of roosters is excessive.

Hi Morbius18.
yeah I do a lot culling.
first cull at hutch any deformed or sick out snap they neck .
second cull at 8 week old (before they go out to the big pens) at this age I sale them to the pet shop ( I sale them cheap just to get ready of them) high demand for them.
third cull at 12 weeks old.pet shop.
the rest of the cull I keep them to feed my self and the dogs.

With all that culling going on, do you actually hatch any birds worth keeping? sounds like you are doing something wrong to experience all these issues.

I know when you are using breedibg pens, you only select 1 male from one, culling all the rest. You select the best 3 or 4 females culling the rest. This occurs while you are working with developing the line, like recreating a breed or fixing color issues. After 4 or 5 generations, they should stabilize and be close to the standard. Its not uncommon to cull 8 out of 10 to get the good breed standard bird. Especially if you are showing or selling them responsibly. Most cull by selling the bad birds, this waters down and bring bad genes into the breeds. Someone will buy a cull and start breeding them, selling them as the breed. It's why there are white feathers, side sprigs and incorrect combs in the GCMs.

Hi Our Roost you alright a lot culling.
I started with a marans breed 3 years ago. I bought a lot different blood line ,So now I m putting them together and breed out any thing they are hiding ( any recessive gene) and there is a lot.

I m breeding to the French standard and I m not feeding any thing isn t worthy keeping or breeding.
I hatched a lot chicks ( 2015 hatch over 2000 chicks ) but I m keeping only 200 best that 10%.

I think I have two golden cuckoo marans . I bought what I was told were cream legbars but they did not have crests and I was told that there were both kinds crested and non crested after much surfing I found some pictures and info on golden cuckoo marans which looked just like what I had.is there any other way to tell what I have?
