Let's talk Golden Cuckoo Marans!

Pics
I am not entirely certain what hens they are from. Two years ago, I hatched eggs from chickie, along side eggs from my them lone GCM hen that I picked up at Muddy Hoof farm in Lubec. They are not breeders of GCM, but have many breeds with varieties that change a lot. The Muddy Hoof hen is cleaned legged and looks like this:
1000

This year, I hatched eggs from last year's pullets crossed back to my rooster. I used three different hens that have darkish eggs:
1000

1000

The two pullets above I suspect may be Muddy Hoof descendants, as they have very little leg feathering and not much golden color. I also hatched eggs from this pullet that I think came from chickie because of her nicely feathered shanks:
1000

I am pleased that this year's two pullets do have feathered shanks. While I like working towards GCMs that are close to the proper type, I am not a breeder and really got into this in hopes for a few dark eggs!

Gorgeous looking GCM .
the first 2 are ER based bird .they are feathered enough to me NOT the first one.
the last one is an e+ based .that why she have a over colored chest.

they are great type and nice cuckoo body color. some they need more gold on they hackle the other need less gold on the chest.

hope that help.

Yep, that last hen pictured is from my eggs. :) I found a local source for some black copper eggs that are Bev's line and lay super dark eggs and have great type to improve my GCM. I just have to downsize to make room for them!

you will have a great result if you cross your GCM with Bev s Black copper. you will get ready of the red chest and add well colored golden hackle.

Good luck with your work

I love our Golden Cuckoo Marans, and we have decided to breed ours. But we want to breed them to the standard of perfection, so any help will be appreciated. I don't have good photos of our hens, so I will just add some of our rooster. The prongs on his comb have fallen off due to frostbite, and most of the feathers on his legs have been plucked off.The first two photos are of him around 5 to 6 months old.

This one was a pure dark brown chick. Now she just looks lighter than the rest, with a bit more golden on her hackles.

Hi Alisha your GCM is great body color but I see a big problem .

he do have yellow feet and beak .he should have a white/pink feet with a hint of gray . Not yellow.

can you let me know where you got them from ?

Oh wow! I never even paid attention to his foot coloration! That is a major problem! We got them from Cackle Hatchery. So I should not use him for a breeding project? Or do you believe the offspring might al have tan legs? All of the hens of pink/tan legs.

My mistake, we got them from Meyers. However, it confuses me that that he has good body coloration, but he has a yellow beak and feet, and feathered legs. So weird!

yellow shank trait of the Barred Rock breed .

So I assume they derive from BR X BCM .

If the hen s have a nice colored feet than don t use him . use a BCM rooster over them if you don t have another rooster.

Morbius18 maybe is a position to help you .

look around don t waste your time.
