Lets Talk Horse Genetics

Good to hear that AQHA has made a decision on the issue.

I am not an QH person and have gotten tired of this issue seeming to dominate the genetics discussion of horses.

I'd imagine it will still impact the market for certain bloodlines, as people aren't as likely to invest in bloodlines that will be affected by the ruling. Those who are already producing these lines will probably have a hard time selling out of that stock.

As if the horse market hadn't tanked enough

That will get interesting, unregisterable QHs and no way of disposing of them. Will the APHA have the same approach?

I just wanted to say that this is a very interesting topic. I love the paint horses and in time and when i have the money I would love to breed a mare but I need a mare and the money.

So, I have a grulla stud a buckskin paint mare, and a champagne QH mare. I bred my stallion to my QH last year and here is what I got:

LS (Ellis) has light barring over his withers like my stud, and shedding out, he has barring showing up on his legs - also has a wonderful dorsal stripe

Here's Smoky:

Smoky's sire is homozygous black, grulla, and his dam was bay. Val's base color with out the champagne dilution gene is actually bay, although she has dun markings (can't see them in the picture). Will her baby from this year carry the champagne gene? I think Smoky is homozygous black, or else they would have thrown a bay foal? Although last year Val was bred to a buckskin stallion, and she had a buckskin filly.

I also got a breeding stock smoky cream filly from my buckskin paint mare when she was bred to a tobiano smoky black stallion. Here is my paint mare with her filly:

I looked long and hard for a stallion like Smoky, with color and excellent bloodlines. I also didn't settle when I got Val. She too has wonderful background. My paint mare was a lucky break. I actually traded with a woman for her. She wanted an unregistered paint that I had who was a good riding horse, so I took Jo in trade. Jo actually has a reining champion on her papers! All of my breeding stock can be viewed on my site, and there are links to each of their pedigrees. LS is Smokys first foal, and he is incredible. Doing sliding stops and roll backs at 2.5 months old!
