I always understood the reason for doing this was just in case the air pocket got scrambled or detached and to make sure it was in the right position before incubation. Plus it stabilizes the temperature in all of the eggs so you are not putting them in from being too cold.
It may be an extra step, but I'm going to do it as an added precaution.
