I have dreamed of moving north to Canada, some empty isolated edge of nowhere, but it's just too expensive and I am no spring chicken anymore.

New Mexico is one of the more isolated of the states, mountains, grasslands and desert in the lower part of the state. With the exception of a few bigger cities, most are towns and villages with only a few thousand people or less. Lots if empty spaces, I do love living here, very enchanting and still holds pieces of the ancient past which has not been mowed over by humanity. The mountains do get snow and temps below zero, but the winters are shorter and more tolerable compared to Canada I am sure! You are so welcome to come on down here!

Problem with Niagara Falls, even though it's on the border, There are still individual sides so you need a passport to go across. I started the process of getting mine, but then left my job.
We're actually not that far apart, so far as driving time. About 8 hours. Which is about how long it would take me to get to Niagara Falls, lol!
But yes, most employment is tourism related or working for the state (schools, police, hospitals, road workers, etc...) A person doesn't do well living here if climbing a corporate ladder is what they are after. I've worked because I had to, never enjoyed it.
