LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

I'm checking into this thread for the first time (lots of catching up to do) and am sorry to see its when you have just had a loss, ChickyCh00k. I'm very sorry that you have to go through that.
When we try our best for our animals and don't get a good outcome it can be so heartbreaking and defeating. However, I am sure that you helped Peanut to be as comfortable and content as possible, which is no less important. You did your best in a very tough situation and that is commendable.

I also just wanted to say I hope everyone's June pride month was affirming and uplifting. I had so much hitting the fan this month I wasn't able to attend any of the local events I enjoy (though my town has a pride event in August too, hoping I can make it to that) so returning to this forum and finding this thread exists has definitely lifted my heart a little bit. 🌈💖

Thank you for the kind words @aquila ❤️‍🩹, and welcome to the thread!

Always happy to see new peeps here (that aren't trolls, lol). :wee

Few updates from me.

Turns out the hen that almost got taken yesterday from the hawk wasn't the only one the hawk went after. I found Tiny hiding underneath my brother's shed. There were a few feathers sitting near him but he's otherwise fine.

The first broody hen that had eggs expecting to hatch this week, is down to a single egg. I already have plans to get some chicks from the feed store whether this one hatches or not.

Blue, our Muscovy duck, has gone broody so I'm trying to decide if I let her sit on her own eggs + the other duck eggs or if I just find a breeder nearby that has ducklings hatching soon.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I'm sorry that trolls find their way to this thread and feel the need to crow instead of using the back button.

A bit about myself, I'm a pan lady in my 30's living in rural western Oregon, and am married to a man. I keep a mixed flock of laying hens (currently 12 hens + 1 roo and 5 chicks) and we are turning an old family farm over to permaculture methods.

I pass well enough with most strangers that I don't receive a lot of hate, but I don't make efforts to hide this side of myself either and definitely stick out a bit with the usual ag crowd around here. Some people I've met are self-identified allies, some are "a little confused but got the spirit" so to speak, some truly don't care and some are kind face to face but the opposite behind the obscurity of a computer screen or another person's actions. It can be hard to navigate sometimes, but so is every community I've known & this one is our home. I find much more beauty and joy in this life than I would if I couldn't keep a farm, garden and chickens.

That is exciting about the broody! but disappointing about the eggs. I had a similar experience recently. Here's hoping the last one hatches. Do you know what kind of chicks you'd get at the feed store?

Thanks for sharing!

I love the idea of permaculture, but I can't even keep a house plant alive 😭.

I am also married to a man, but I was in a long-term relationship with a woman before I met my husband, so I'm fluid in that way I suppose. My youngest son is also part of the LGBTQIA+ community, so I'm a supporter no matter what.

It's nice to meet you and learn about your life a little. Do keep us updated on the farm-to-permaculture adventure!
