LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

Yeah, they even had to cross the street to get to us. So like what if a car had been passing and hit the dogs?
Yes, so many people don't train their small dogs at all and the small dogs get away with so much more bad behavior 😓
Recording your walks might be a good idea, you never know what you might catch on camera!
Yeah we don't even go to parks or dog parks but almost have an issue every week (sometimes multiple times a week)
Not the kind of thing I'd mean to catch but-
I was once walking my sister's dog in the woods, look up and see a deer just a few metres away! She just stared for what felt like the longest moment, and then she turned and ran into the vegetation.
Wish I'd been recording that!

I have good luck in spotting wildlife, exotic pink and green moths, rare birds
But one time I saw a pure white stag.
He was laying in a clearing surrounded by other deer. He was the only white one. Just gorgeous. Apparently thats super rare, wont stumble accross another in my lifetime.

One thing to consider with sports like shutzhund is it might cause legal issues if something does go wrong and your assistance dog bites someone, since you are training your dog to bite. Also check if it is legal to do where you are, I have heard some people say that it is illegal to train a assistance dog in bitework but I don’t know if that is actually true anywhere

I plan to try as many sports as I can with my assistance dog and see what we like! Not many near us but I am going to try agility, rally, working trials, hoopers and maybe obedience

So I'm still on the fence on if I even need/qualify for a service dog so I need to look into that first, but I will definitely check the legal protections here where I'm at in the US. I've personally never heard anyone say anything about it being illegal but again, I can do some digging and check in on that.

Whiiiicchh as I was typing this I actually did some quick digging and apparently you are correct. While a service dog is totally fine to do the non-bite training parts of Schutzhund, the minute they are bite trained they're no longer classified as service dogs. So that answers that question, there was a whole discussion on it over on the SD subreddit which had sources so it makes sense now.

Its less of a training issue and more that if something does go wrong with your dog in public it can be used against you, since people can argue that your dog is trained to bite. Its just something that anyone who wants to do bitework with their assistance dog needs to consider

Right, so now that I've done a bit of research I now know I can't go down this route of cross training for both psychiatric service and schutzhund, unless I omit the bite work portion of schutzhund, which means said dog wouldn't be able to advance in that sport, but that's okay.

The good news is, that breeder I mentioned earlier has champion schutzhund lines as well as puppies that have gone on to be service dogs for veterans and others before. And they have an entire training facility and classes. So not going into anything blindly which is great. And even if I don't do a service dog, or I do a service dog that's not trained in schutzhund, the plan is to still get a GSD to do schutzhund with from this breeder.

The main reason I was wondering about all this was because the way things are going in the US right now with trans people, has my anxiety up so high it's not even funny. My hypervigilance is off the charts and I do not feel safe going most places by myself at all, hell even sometimes when I'm out with my mom at the grocery store I'm doing nothing but looking over my shoulder. Even though I pass very well these days thanks to surgery and hormones.

My state and some of the neighboring states are safe, but even still you never know when something's going to happen. I don't feel comfortable carrying a firearm, but I do feel comfortable with a dog by my side. Especially a very well trained one. Plus most a-holes will walk the other way or give you a wide berth if you have a big black dog on a leash.... I did hear something on the subreddit about "nonviolent protection" and that being okay, but I have no idea what that means so I guess I'd have to look into it.

What really bugs me, is out of control dogs off leads. Both my dogs are on leads in public because they get overhyped or anxious around other dogs. And I've had tiny aggressive dogs charge my Storm from behind and start biting at her legs, and my poor girly just wanted to get away from it.
And this is a dog that could easily fling that dog like a squirrel. She just chose to listen to be and leave it. God forbid my dogs defend themselves, then they'd be the monster 🙄
And these owners never apologise, and don't leash their animal after. Just carry on after a rude look??
Ohhhhh don't get me started on that. That soapbox needs to stay firmly in the broom closet where it belongs! But I am right there with you. I would never ever let Tucker off leash in public because I know he's not okay with other dogs, it's the main reason why we can't take him anywhere because we know he's gonna freak out and I don't want someone's dog getting hurt because he lost his marbles.

I am the jelly!!!

Good luck!

You do realise it doesn't end there right?
The Q, the plus, we don't have to point out every letter. LGBT, LGBT+, LGBTQ, LGBTQIA
All fine

Unless you want to read the entire alphabet next time, instead of saying ABC....

This is why I like using the term "queer" as a good descriptor because it's so much easier to say "Yeah I'm a queer person" other than I'm "Trans, Demi, Pan, etc. etc. etc." Obviously make sure people are okay with that term first, I still know a couple of friends that aren't really okay with using "Queer" because it was used as a slur when they were growing up, but they're working on getting more comfortable with it since it's being used a lot more today as a helpful descriptor.

I'm not sure I should go too far down this road, but I often see homosexual cis white people on social media who insist they know exactly how other people (especially people under the trans umbrella) feel. They basically behave like "be quiet, don't complain, I experience hatred too"
But there are levels of privilege that we have as cis white people, we DONT know exactly what its like for other people. I wish that were a little more acknowledged by some people in the community. It isn't a competition, but they talk about it as though it is. We need to accept that some of us have more privilege than others, and that isn't fair. And we should be speaking up for those people.

Overall we just need to protect eachother, especially those who face more battles, different battles, than we face, instead of invalidating their experiences
Thissss!!! Absolutely this!

I have friends who are gay/bi/pan/lesbian/etc. but they're cis and they can't seem to wrap their heads around why I am so panicked right now. Or why I can't travel to certain states.

And ugh, bless my straight friends who are allies but they really don't get it some days. It's like I have to spell it out for them. "Yeah I can be legally murdered in Mississippi!" "No you don't understand, that drag ban in TN? Yeah it's so vaguely worded that it also covers trans people which means if you're found out in public as yourself, right to jail!"

I wish I could get Cis folks to understand exactly how difficult it is for me and other trans people, especially right now. But there's only so much they can grasp without having experienced it first hand. :(

Exactly right!! When I heard about the drag ban, outraged isn't a strong enough word. I'm fuming about it. How could anyone think that's fair??

Like, I'm a cis (shut up brain, I am questioning a bit but still identify as cisgendered), white woman- and although I get discriminated against for being queer, being a woman-- it is on no where near the same level as it is for trans people Especially black trans women who statistically speaking experience some of the highest levels of public violence, I believe

Like, I can leave my house without worrying about being hurt, I can use a public restroom without being afraid. That's privilege, a lot of it, and so I will do my best to educate others in my position
I don't live in the states, thank god, I live in the UK, which has its issues, but, just know I'm over here cheering you all on

Can I just say how much I love your long messages😭 as BelovedBirds said, as a cis person, I can leave my house feeling relatively safe, I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it must be. Totally understand wanting a protection dog, plus it's totally bad a$$😎 (sorry humor is my way of coping with stress)

Personally I think humour is always appreciated!

Sorry I'm jumping between subjects, but back to the flock naming thing, since this is a Greek landrace breed, I was thinking of maybe going with ancient Greek/Greek mythology theme, any ideas?
Eros? :lau Sorry, couldn't resist. You're in Attica, so why not that?
