OK here we go! Basically this is a rant as to why I don't think rescues here would allow me to foster their dogs. First and foremost, I'd like to say, Greece is FULL of feral and stray dogs. Important note is though, that 99% of these dogs are either LGD mixes or hunting dog mixes, so that is what you'll most likely find in a shelter. While hunting dogs can work for more homes than LGD mixes, both don't fit many households especially not those that live in the bug cities. Appart from that, we don't have many good trainers here (don't get me wrong, I know of some excellent ones, but you'd have to know where to look to find them, and most people here either don't know where to look, or they're too unbothered to put in the effort) The rescue groups in Greece in their effort to find as many homes to as many dogs as possible, advocate these LGD mixes as wonderful pet dogs that do well in a family setting in a house, which in my opinion I'd very misleading and potentially dangerous down the line. Because they under no sircumstances agree with responsible breeding, they refuse to give these dogs to knowledgeable fosters, trainers, and breeders (because most of these people agree with responsible breeding, plus they advocate for working homes) In addition, rescue groups have ads that play regularly on TV, and some of them are downright bad (some I actually agree with though, it's not all bad) My most hated one is an ad that features a popular Greek actor/comedian (I think) who tells us that early on he had a purebred (not wellbred) dog he wanted to breed because she was pretty, but later on found out that there are many dogs in need of homes so he adopted a new doh instead, and encourages us to do the same. My main problem with this, is that it does a very bad job at explaining responsible breeding. Breeding a dog just because it's purebred and because it's pretty is a very bad way of going about breeding dogs, it's BYB level stuff. Responsible breeders do a million evaluations, spend money on shows, expensive health tests (not your typical vet exam) , spend hours and hours with each litter, and if said dog breed is also a hunting breed, double the cost. So yeah, basically I just really hate the representation of ethical breeding in this add, but I do agree with the adopting side. I just don't really like how it's set up right now
