My mom is in a somewhat similar position though with my dad. He doesn't want any animals once our dog and last cat go, unless it's an actual guard dog breed.

My mom wants a pug.

Suffice to say, a pug isn't tlbeginning to be close to the type of.guard dog he's wanting.

Pugs do have unnaturally squished faces though, which isn’t good for the dog; so I’d go with the guard dog breed instead, if for a real guard dog then a reputable breeder

I don't have a say. My mom wants to get a pet quality one from a breeder in hopes of getting one with a better face. She just likes how they seem more couch potatoes than other small dogs

My daughter went into labour last night. She's still at home, but has an appointment in three hours at the hospital.

To be fair, the health problems mostly come with BYB dogs. It's just that 99% of pug and bulldog breeders are BYB

Thank you everyone for the responses.
The reason my dad said he doesn't want another dog, is he doesn't want to take care of another one. He says that he'll be too old by then to take care of any other pets. He's not even in his 50s yet and he's already been talking about this stuff.
The only dog he said he'll approve of us getting, is a LGD once we move. Only because I brought that up to him and mentioned how I'd be the only one training, taking care of, etc.
I'm actually not sure how I brought that up to him when I did.

I also found a few breeders who will possibly have some litters near November of this year and February of next year. I don't mind waiting, I just want to bring it up to him in a way to convince him.
Especially since it'll most likely be MY dog and I plan to make sure I take care of everything.

Then IMO the matter settled itself. Just make sure you get a dog breed that matches your lifestyle so your dad doesn't have to help. May I ask which breed that is?

Yeah, he's still grieving. After some time he will come around
