Just found out that at a minimum, I'll be paying $300 for Nyx's vet visit. And that's just the exam and vaccines. Once the vet checks her over for possible feline asthma, they'll add onto the total cost.

Vets are stupidely expensive, and the 'pet insurance' is nothing more than a scam.

It's mostly the vaccines. They're $50 each

There's no reason for that. They cost them pennies each. And (imo, feel free to disagree) are not necessary. They are a cash cow for vets. Over-vaccination has caused more issues for pets than 'not enough'.

My own vet actually agrees with me on this. She's a naturopathic vet though.

I think vaccinations, depending on what for, are super important.

I think a breeder or long term and knowledgeable owner can weigh their risks and choose what works for them best. The average pet owner should just go ahead and get the vaccines since it’s much less risk than if they didn’t. Kind of like spaying and neutering. Okay to go without if you know what you are doing, but you definitely don’t want your average pet owner to go without it.

Veterinarians right now have so many expenses, and a lot more goes into the cost of giving the vaccines than just the actual vaccine itself. Staff, equipment maintenance, rent on the building, etc. Like how the mareks vaccine in chickens you have to buy in huge quantities, even if you are only vaccinating a couple birds. And then it has to be discarded after a couple hours so you can’t hold on to it.

Not to mention being ridiculously understaffed.


We do have a local vet who overprices compared to everyone else. She sucks.

I think it depends on the species and the vaccine
I lost two of my rabbits to a fast killing virus, they didn't even show symptoms, it just took them really fast. So now I'd vaccinate rabbits for that to try and prevent it happening again

The vaccines for my cat are very important to me as I'm a paranoid cat owner.
Plus, I'm more concerned about getting her rabies shot up to date.
