Well it happened again... we lost the ducklings last night.
I'm going to take a break from having any sort of baby bird here as I'm not doing a good job at keeping them safe from dying.
I went to lock them up last night and found a opossum in the coop. It ran off before I even made it inside but it had already gotten the ducklings
Strangest thing, is the mama hens didn't make any sort of alarm noise at all while the opossum was in there. They only started making noise once I entered the coop

Don't beat yourself up over it, we all have those bad years:hugs. Maybe have the broodies in the brooder instead of in the regular coop?

I'm also seeing some air cells forming already, or what it looks like at least. Does anyone have a good picture from an actual candled egg so I could make a good comparison?
I have zero photos of my candled eggs. But this is basically what you are looking for...

Oh I am so sorry! :hugs Predators are brutal, I know how heartbreaking stuff like this is. 💔

OK this is what I'm seeing on some of them. Two have the same thing, but it's sort of scrambled, so I'm guessing those are goners (it also moves around as you turn the egg). The more recent eggs have not formed the air cell yet, so I don't know how long it takes for it to form

I don't candle eggs until at least day 4 or 5, blood rings happen easily before this (death of the embryo) and the veins aren't well enough defined to know for sure. By day 7 I start pitching eggs that are quitters or clears with no veins. If you aren't seeing air cells by day 7, you need to lower your humidity.

They're not yet in the bator, I'm just candling to make sure they have an air cell before I put them in. Or is that wrong too:lau

Unfortunately I can't. Once I move my broodies, they go nuts and eventually stop being broody but I was going to allow them to raise babies this time instead of breaking them out of it
