LGD pups- one or two?UPDATE p2!!!!

DEFINITELY get ONE. I got two littermates and it was a mistake, even tho they do keep each other entertained, they have encouraged each other to chase and now kill my chickens, peas and guineas.

The one boy almost listens to me, he stops when I say NO, but then the girl bounds off and then he follows her rather than listen to me. I have really spent a LOT (massive) amount of time training with them as well, but they do tend to bond to each other even if they DO bond to you.

Also I have read two of the same sex can be trouble later on when they fight for dominance.

You will spend about 6 more times the amount of time training with two than you will with one. UGH! I have already spent three hours today with him and that is just with the boy. NOW I have to do the same with the girl.

Listen to one who has been there....and is still there....

I love watching them, they are entertaining as all get out, but they DO teach each other bad habits and what one doesnt think of, the other will. I really do not think I would have this issue with the chickens if I only had one, as they will just lay around with the chickens all over them if by themselves, but they egg each other on bigtime.

Good luck.

Oh also mine are the same mix, and their parents were working goat dogs as well, with chickens running free range all over with no problem. They are beautiful and loving dogs, good with my 4 year old niece, run off predators, all you could ask for if wasnt this issue with them with my birds.

Ahhhh- thank you! That's exactly what I was worried about. We'll just get one, maybe pick up one for a friend if anybody wants, but just to hold for a couple days.

I would also go with one (I'll chime in, even though it seems that you have decided to get one...but just in case you almost give in because they will be sooo adorable when you see them!) I would mainly be concerned with dominance fighting...it is never a good idea to get littermates with dogs, and especially the same sex. Also the bonding with humans thing, but that is less of a concern if the dog is going to be staying outdoors and behaving as a farm dog. Get this guy, and after a year, see if you would like another...by that time, this guy should be doing his thing, and can actually help teach a new pup the ropes!

We brought one home yesterday! His name is Yetti. He has 6 toes on his back feet! (2 dew claws together?)

he was really shy when we first got back and only would come out from under the swingset to be with our dog Ulee. This morning he decided that people are ok too

So cute and I love the name! I am curious to see what kind of temperament this mix has as an adult. I've contemplated getting a LGD myself, but don't want the hair of a full Pyr.

They're supposed to be basically like a great pyr personality-wise . Anatolians have an undercoat too and supposedly they could use frequent brushing in the summer months. I'm hoping this guy is somewhere in between- because we have some pretty harsh winters in the mountains sometimes. Yetti will always be able to come in the house if it's bad out, but still....

He's so cute!

I love that name too, it fits him. Have fun with your puppy!
