So my girls have lice, and I feel just awful about it. I do use DE in their coop and dust bathing holes. So do I need to sit out there and really dust them with DE or do I need to go buy something else. Also I have a Broody Silkie sitting on eggs, so not sure what to do with her, because I don't want to disturb her. Also someone told me to use Front Line, but can we still eat the eggs after that?

Help

DE actually isn't very good for killing lice and mites like some people think. What you need to do is go to Tractor Supply or another farm/feed/garden store and pick up some Sevin 5% Dust. It's in a red container. Dust the birds with it, either by putting some in old nylons and using the nylons as a powder puff all over their body, or by filling a small bag with Sevin, putting the bird in leaving just its head out, and gently shaking the bag so the dust goes all around the bird. I like the nylon method. Wait ten days, and do it all over to kill any that might have hatched in the meantime, since Sevin does not kill eggs, just adults. I would also add some Sevin to their dust bathing areas. You can still eat the eggs after this, there is no withdrawal time.
