I raised 18 from eggs last year and mine where very difficult to tell pullet from cockerel. At 12 weeks I was "sure" I had 12 pullets and 6 cockerels but 3-4 weeks later I had to concede that there was an even split, 9 pullets and 9 cockerels. I too think that your birds are just gorgeous. Mine didn't look nearly as nice at that age but once mine got their adult feathers they were beautiful.
That is so helpful AND comforting to know that the pullets also have a green sheen to their tail feathers. The other two both have a green sheen to their developing tails! So there's still hope yet that they are pullets!!! Yaay!!!!
I think though, that I might take some photos of the other two today and post them here too. So long as I have two pullets out of the three chickens, I'm happy! Doesn't matter to me who the cockerel is, so long as I only have one.
countrychiz, thanks for your comments. I have been very lucky to find these birds as in Thailand western chickens are almost unheard of. I can't wait to see what they will look like as adults!
I would love to see others chicks too, so please post them here if you have photos.
Will post further photos of my other two here as soon as I have the opportunity. Have a great day everyone and thank you!
Hi, I've taken some photos of my other chickens this morning. Hope that you guys can tell me what these other two are please. I'm really worried that I've either got 2 cockerels or maybe even all three are cockerels!
Apologies first off - I'm getting really frustrated with myself deciding one minute this one or that one is a cockerel and then changing my mind....does anyone ever feel like they are going crazy over sexing their chickens? Anyway, I know there are a LOT of photos here, just wanted to give you all as much to work with as possible.
Sure hoping that someone can confirm the gender of these three for me. All three will be 7 weeks old tomorrow.
To save everyone having to look back at page one for Tilly, I've re-posted that chicks photos here:
Chick 1: Tilly
Chick 2: Sybil
Held up some of the feathers on saddle area to see what new feathers were coming Whimsy, in the post above, said their pullet had green tail feathers.
I hate to admit it, but Sybil has the reddest comb of everyone....please say she's
a pullet anyway?? I've read that in hot climates the heat can make combs redder?
Chick 3: Phoebe
And finally, just for comparison, some photos of all three together. (I sure hope I'm not offending anyone with all these photos???)
in order of: Tilly, Sybil and then Phoebe Tilly, Sybil and then Phoebe again
Phoebe, Sybil and then Tilly on the right
Tilly, Sybil and Phoebe
Whew! That's the lot! Promise.
My kids wonder how I can remember who is who - after the amount of time I've spent trying to figure out who is a pullet and who is a cockerel, trust me, I know who is who. LOL
Thanks everyone for your input. Hopefully you can all help me finally put the gender of my new chickens to rest (or should that be "to roost").
I'm gonna guess two roos here, at least.. Seven weeks old? My brahmas didn't get red like that until at least 20 weeks and one doesn't even have wattles that big at 24 weeks..
Here's a pic of my brahma at about 14 weeks.. No red at all. She's now a laying hen, just turned red a few weeks ago.
Oh no, two roos!! That's just what I was afraid of...
Yes they are 7 weeks old... Do you think they might be older than this? I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were. So, I'm guessing you think Sybil and Phoebe are the boys?
