Both are harmful...that's why I quit. No more bulbs for me. I can't wait for the day that I can move on 20 acres and build a electricity free cabin with an outhouse and livestock roaming around. Seriously, if an outhouse was ok for my momma...it's ok with me.
I think I would get major headaches from trying to write a book by candlelight. It would be too much eyestrain.
For real...candlelight is nice, but not for everything. Of course, if you really live in tune with the cycles of nature, you'd do your writing/reading by daylight and go to sleep when the sun went down!
I've done a little bit of research on alternatives to electric lighting. It's a toughie. There are non-electric oil lamps out there, but the lamp oil is petroleum-based...gas lamps scare the begeesus out of me...solar is expensive.... I need to do more research!
Trisha, you might have fun here: www.lehmans.com Love this place. Cool stuff for living without electricity. They sell to a lot of Amish families. I know several Mennonite families, they use gas-powered lights, fans, etc. Like I said, that scares me, though. Bad house fires are not all that uncommon in our local Mennonite community.
