DUH! I was being sarcastic because he was trying to debate after I said this was not a debate.

Lets not forget, vaccines are injected straight into your body (or that of your child if you let them) Fish is injested. Light bulbs are not eaten (I hope) or injected... so lets remain calm.

And remember - there are still vaccines out there containing mercury... still being used.
I'd rather sit under a mercury filled light that have it injected.

I have switched my entire house to the CFL's. I did them one at a time as a bulb would burn out. Now that I am fully converted, the electricity savings are AMAZING! Far more than was projected on the package. I am a light freak. The light quality I get with these is far superior to incandescent bulbs. I use the "daylight" type and it is wonderful. We read a lot in this house and I refuse to damage my children's eyesight with low quality lighting. I WILL recycle my bulbs when they burn out, which will be far in the future. Every package I purchased was clearly marked with a warning about the mercury content and the need to recycle as opposed to just disposing of them. I have yet to see a package that did not contain the warning.

Not debating - Just stating what I know:

I use CFLs. Costo practically gives them away for free thanks to government rebates.
They last a lot longer and use a lot less electricity, thereby saving me money. The light
is more artificial than a regular bulb but I don't mind it.

On the other hand CFLs are another "Green" movement scam. They use a LOT more
energy to make and like many things in our lives are somewhat toxic.

CFLs do not reduce emmissions. Just because someone turns off a light or AC does
not mean a power plant reduces emissions. Power plants are on or off. The two
real reasons the governments want CFLs is to look good politically and because
the wires that deliver the power from the plants (the grid) is old and at 110% capacity.

Mercury in our water, air, land, and houses should be a concern of all of us.

This is a simplification of a complex issue.

I think you have to strike a balance between the risk you are willing to take and the inconvenience you are willing to endure.

I have lived without electricity and in door plumbing. I sure won't do that again.

That said, we have really done some terrible things in the past out of ignorance. I too remember the bead of mercury that the teacher let us pass around the room from hand to hand.

I remember when DDT was considered a miracle. We were going to kill every living fly in the world with it. Every week, the class rooms at school were fumigated with it. Malaria was going to be wipped out.

After World War II, my father bought surplus DDT to put into the adobe bricks to build an insect free house.

Asbestos was considered a gift from the gods. My mother had a coat made with asbestos. It was everywhere, in building supplies and insulation. I still have asbestos floor tiles in my house.

All paint contained lead. There was no alternative, and who knew that it was dangerous.

The worse was in 1954 we sat on a roof top and watched a hydrogen bomb go off. The government said it was safe, and it was our partiotic duty to watch it.

Two years later, my mother had her cancerous thyroid gland removed. The government collected it up from the clinic. When my father died of liver cancer, his liver was collected.

Don't trust the government; they could careless about us.

We live and we learn.

Rufus

Y'all are so funny! You take a thread and you run with the insults as fast as you can.

The real funny thing is you can really tell when people have had a grudge with you because they are always the first to call you ignorant and fight so hard to go against everything you say. I can count you people on one hand so I'm not worried about it compared to people on this forum that are my online buddies.

I do not have to stand up for myself when it comes to the way I live. Only one person that has been on this forum has been to my house so she is the only person who can say that she saw how I live. The rest of you have no clue. So I'm not going to comment on how my laundry detergent, household cleaners, shampoo, soap and so on are NOT toxic because I MAKE THEM ALL MYSELF...oops I just did comment didn't I.

Oh well whatever. Y'all keep holding your grudge and you know exactly who y'all are because you make rude comments on every single thread I start. I DO have a job thanks for asking and I have to be there in 30 minutes so...

Leave it to the inventors to make something good out of things that are bad...doh.
My cousin had these new energy saving bulbs and after a year with them, they began to dim and brighten. Soon the outlet would hum. She took the light out and took precautions( in a lamp at first) , then the over head light gave her problems.
Needless to say, she had to have these sockets replaced. She and her electrition feel it was from these new energy saving bulbs.
I have not given anymore thought to it until this link came up.

I've been complaining about this for awhile. There are a lot of other options for saving energy, but not many options to dispose of giant mounds of toxic waste. I'm really hoping the ban won't be enforced.

Thanks Buster, and countryboy for the welcomes!
I'm quite used to forums and the type of folks who rile things up and/or are quite zealous about their opinions...not that I am always comfortable about it, mind you!

Southern28, I was gonna add when I thanked you for your welcome that I do think you DID want a debate because you posted again an hour after your first one in this thread...it seems to me as though you were itching to see what people had to say to your initial post. Just my thoughts.

I agree w/many members who are more moderate thinking (and I apologize for not cut and pasting all your names...I am getting ready to leave to visit my sister in PA in a few minutes); we can do only what we can and for some people it's a small amount and for some a large amount. Seems that Southern28 is able to do a lot; myself, I do what I can by bringing my own bags to do groceries, my chosing to live in a small town so we can bike around town, recycling, composting, making my own laundry detergent...etc. But I'm not, nor do I want to be, Helen Nearing.

I think that instead of bashing people who don't do a lot, we all should be glad for those who are doing what they can.
