light bulbs

Honestly, that request is kind of selfish and most likely would be ignored.

"Mr. Congressman, please fight to repeal the removal of incandescent light bulbs, which would lower utility requirements for all, thereby increasing the wealth of our people and ultimately improving the health of our planet, just so I can save a few dollars on heaters for my chicks? Pretty please?"

having to pay$4-6 for a light bulb is not going to increase wealth, for many poor people this is going to be a hardship...this is just another government regulation of deciding what is best for a person, not letting the individual decide for themselves which bulb they want. we are slowly becoming a nation of having someone in congress deciding things they have no right to do. it is my understanding that the new light bulb is not healthier although it may use less energy. i did not mean you to go off the deep-end, take a deep breath and exhale.

It would increase wealth because the $4-$6 light bulbs save a whole lot more in the energy they don't use.

The healthier planet is also thanks to the reduced amount of power needed to run those $4-$6 light bulbs.

I hadn't heard about this. I know alot of industries depend on incadesant vs. floresant as they put out a different kind of light and differnt types of rays. (Reptiles and Aquarium plants need certain types of rays to stay healthy). Just to make sure I'm on the right page here.... Incadesant would mean going to only the tube type bulbs and the corkcrew looking ones? I have a 3 or so of the white heat bulbs from the farm store and a few 70w and 40w bulbs for around the house. But we recently had a meeting that they are replacing all the light bulbs in our apartments (gov. run) with floresant and we will have to go through them for new ones if they burn out.

Let's hope they come up with something for just that. For the industries that need the heat from bulbs. I am guessing that they surely would.
We use the others in our some of our lighting in the house for us. One in the hall, some in the kitchen. Will be interesting how this goes for everyone..so many different needs. Some people won't miss the old ones.

I am glad you all brought this up..I had forgotten about it. Guess I need to start filling up a warehouse full of bulbs and before Jan. So I wonder how many I would use in a year, then X's that for 20 years(if I am lucky to live another 20)...I probably really do need a warehouse full of bulbs...LOL

I ship live birds so I have the 72 hour heat packs. I lost 20 chicks the other day due to a power outage. What I did to prevent this, put a heat pack/hand warmer in the brooder. Well... The power went off again...BUT I went and checked the biddies and they were on the heat packs! Problem solved for emergencies!

My homemade cabinet takes 2 100 watt bulbs. I look like a hoarder with these lightbulbs. Soon you will be seeing me with a trench coat selling them in the allys!

I hope they'll repeal this law as well. Energy wasted as heat is NOT wasted if you live somewhere cold.

Fluorescents may save energy in warm climates, but they create an environmental risk when they are disposed.

And here where it gets really cold in the winter, they don't work well for outdoor and barn applications; there isn't enough heat energy around the bulb for it to fluoresce when the power goes on, so the bulb just sits and hums and burns energy without lighting up. They stay on okay if you turn them on before winter sets in, but if you wait till you need it, it won't work.

The mistake congress made was assuming that a solution that works for DC is going to work everywhere. Parochialism at it's finest.

So I already stocked up. But for the sake of the environment, I hope they do repeal it. (We've used compact fluorescents for years indoors, but they're not making them as well as when they first came out. They don't last a long time like they used to, so the benefits are much less. Probably because most of the manufacturing has gone to China.)

Oh...just buy up all the incandescent light bulbs you can right now, and when they are banned...you can sell them back to the hippies that banned them for a huge profit!

This post is 99% flame free, and 100% trolling free!

I'm back! Buy them up and you can sell them back to the vary people that banned them for dollars on your penny. It will be the new 2012 cottage industry that gives people what they want, even thou it's BANNED!

Yeah...buy that expensive ceramic THINGY for $25. I have 2 100watt bulbs for $5.

I'm telling you...it will be a cottage industry!

I switched to a ceramic heat emitter earlier this year and will never go back. In addition to providing a good source of heat, it allows the chicks to have a normal day/night cycle from the get go, instead of having lights on 24/7 for the first few weeks.

Problem is, I don't really need the heat. I need the light. Fluorescent light won't work in the coop in the winter, unless I turn it on in the fall and leave it on all winter long. An incandescent I can put on a timer and get a decent light cycle, and the extra heat doesn't hurt and isn't too much.

What about LEDs, would they work in some of the aplications where light is needed but not heat? I think LEDs will remain on the market with these "trade out your old christmas lights for LEDs" sale ads I've heard this year. I don't guess LEDs would be very bright but if fluorescent won't turn on I guess it would be better than total dark.
