Light Sussex Thread!!!

Is the hackle the only issue? I thought the amount of dark on the wings was not a LS trait?
For me, yes. One could have a Light Sussex with wings as improper as those on the chick and still be a Light Sussex. But the black hackle is definitive for Light Sussex. Then again, if you are truly seeing barring. The barring gene doesn't exist in any Sussex variety.
Best,
Karen

The first of my LS hatch to emerge. I will keep updating on how they do. I have two lines in the incubator, both utility lines from the UK, it will be interesting to see how close to the standard they come, I'm hoping for true dual purpose type and growth.

I posted a photo of this bird a while back, it hatched from an egg sold as a barred rock, the other chicks from these eggs are definately barred rocks.I'm still not sure what breed this is and do not think it can be a light Sussex which is what the seller thinks, there seems to be allot of marking on the head/ neck. Could this be a poorly marked light Sussex? It does seem to have a very brick like shape.

wow, it looks like a Blue Splash something. I don't see any of the Columbian gene markings which would mark it as a Light Sussex.
Very interesting,
Karen

The breeder sells Rhode Island Red and Barred Plymouth Rock. They where preparing to sell the following when I bought the eggs, they are now selling most of these; Vorwerk, Silver-Laced Wyandotte, Welsummer, Barnevelder, Black Rock and Ayam Cemani.
I have some younger light Sussex that are not feathering in the same way, but the breeder has said it is a LS based in an earlier photo. I'll send him a more recent one soon. The colouring is not really black either...
