Light Sussex Thread!!!

I've kept hybrids (Warrens) before, but opted for the light Sussex LF as a decent replacement. We have up scaled our poultry keeping somewhat & have 2 Warrens,11 light Sussex & 4 Cayuga ducks. They seam to be a good breed so fare & don't dig up the garden to much, seam very friendly to my daughter (who's 4) & hopefully should provide some decent eggs/meat in a months time. Not sure i can find anything wrong with them as a breed to be honest.

However is there any easy way to sex them at a few weeks old? I generally go on size, attitude, combe & wattle size compared to the others & i think i have it correct so far, but any advise is welcome.

Hi,
I have a Light Sussex cock for sale. He is "Knight And Day", one of my stud cocks. A tightly linebred grandson of 3x APA Grand Champion cock , "Senior". This is a Walt Boese pure English strain cock. This is a very rare strain. Knight And Day produced very well for me last year. He is prepotent for his type in his sons. His daughter tend to be intermediate. He is show quality, only failing in his comb whose points were lost to the frost in last years bitter winter. He is available on to those in PA as we are not NPIP. There are too many added regulations to get NPIP in PA we were told by the NPIP folk. I am rehoming Knight And Day because I have his full brother and don't need him any more since I used him last year.If you are interested, please contact me Karen Tewart at [email protected]
My avatar is "May" who is Knight And Day's aunt. Knight And dDy was hatched about May of 2013. These pics were taken when on 4-24-14. He is larger now.

hello everybody I have a question about my light Sussex I brought on Sunday, their are 18weeks old and they have a browny yellow tint on their wings, are they meant to or r they a cross breed? xx

Hi,
On sexing youngsters
When their feathers come in, check the hackle feathers.
If they are rounded at the end, they are female.
If they are pointed at the ends, they are male.
Best,
Karen

Hello,

My light sussex sits on her eggs all the time and we have to take the eggs from her. We do not have a coq and bought her one and a half months ago. Is this normal?

I would suggest a cross breed but that doesnt mean they are no good, it all depends on what you want them for?

I myself purchased some PURE light Sussex eggs from an eBay dealer & although the hatch was good with 6 from 6. One has yellow legs (so a cross), another has a funny wing marking (as per yours) & all are much smaller that the other pure Sussex LF I already have.

I'd like to think this wasn't a deliberate omission from the seller, however i now have a very easy choice who to breed from next season.....and its not these last 6 hatchings.
