Light Sussex - Updated pics on pg.2: post 16

i know, i know....i'm beating this topic into the ground, i apologize..
but does anyone have any thoughts as to why bird #3 has a more defined tail and #1 &2 almost appear to be rumpless?
could #3 be a possible roo? or the other way around? i dunno.....
their combs and feet are just about equal in size, but #3 is actually a lil smaller in body size...
i had a tough time w/my rir's but these are taking me for a loop!!!
i've done numerous searches but i haven't really found any info or pics that are specific to this breed.

They are all pullets. At 13 weeks roos have pronounced combs and wattles and also saddle feathers developing. My lights all start laying around 20 weeks. As for the tails its just in the breeding and something I am working on. Nice birds

i see.....
so the difference in the tails doesn't necessarily mean pullet or roo...gotcha. that's what had me scratching my head....

JanieMarie, would you have any pics of your light sussex around that age?

Pullets! Congratulations! By 13 weeks mine were almost crowing. Very nice girls. I know that last pic the tail set is almost rooish but I don't see any saddle feathers and they are standing like girls.

My one young roo I have here is very upright and tall, no doubt he is a roo. If I can snap a pic of him I will. I call him Stretch because he has the longest legs I have see on a Sussex.

I also have Light Sussex and they all look like little Roos to me. Sorry.

As far as the tail goes. I had both tail types develop into litttle Roos. Perfectly formed tail like a little hen and also rumpless.

At least with my birds/genetics I was not able to tell that way. however the young pullets did not seem to have that kind of laid down tail.

One way is that the Roos are noticeably bigger at even 6-8weeks old. My pullets had almost no comb at all just like other breeds. I have 10 week olds right now and have 2 Roos and a pullet. She has almost no comb.

My big boys are just stating to crow at almost 5 months old. Again genetics, maybe it is the line of birds that I have.

Also look at how they walk/carry themselves, Roos more upright and pullets more horizontal.

Anyway keep us posted on what they do become as I am very curious.

all 3 look like roos...? Ouch!!!!!!!
with all due respect, i hope your wrong!!!!!
but i would love to see pics if you have any....

I really do too!!

What I noticed with mine were that I had 3 definite Roos at 8 weeks old, 3 definite Pullets and 3 that I kept hoping were pullets. The last 3 were not as big as the Roos, although the smallest was very scrappy. Anyway, I ended up with 6 Roos and 3 Pullets. It took the longest time to totally determine the last 3. They were very healthy just dif genetics but one of those grew into my favorite perfect coloring Roo. He just didn't grow as fast or mature as quickly as the others.

It is possible that that is what is going on here. But I hope not for your sake.
Try watching them and how they stand and walk. Although one in the picture definitely has what looks like a pullet stance, just not the comb. Also mine, even with the Roos their combs stayed a very light pink for a very, very long time. Longer than other breeds that I have.

Good luck and keep us posted. It wo'nt be the first time that someone is sold pullets that are not.
It has happened to me also, pretty disapointing.
