I am still trying to decide whether or not to use supplemental lighting this winter ... my girls (brown leghorns) quit laying completely for about 3 months this past winter. My question is, if I add lighting, would it be better to put it in the run to simulate real daytime light or does it need to be in the coop?

In the run? Add a night light or small wattage bulb and it will improve egg production during the shorter daylight Winter months. You can opt to put in on a timer if you wish. Since my coop is pretty large, I will use a couple of brooder lamps with higher wattage. They serve to help egg production and the birds enjoy a place or two in the coop with spot heating to thaw out during sub zero temps.
