Lilly's Life:

Chapter 3

I woke up. I was shivering. I looked around to observe my surroundings. I blinked. I was still in the hen house. Mom and Rose were gone. Maybe they wanted me to get some rest? I was still shivering and it was nearly dark. My eyes felt a million tons. I plopped down from the nesting box and headed to the coop. I ate and drank, maybe this would make me stop shivering.
When I was done there was no one in sight. Shouldn’t everyone be roosting by now? Or did they just want to stay out a bit more? I was confused. I decided to just go out and look for mom and Rose.
First I looked under the pine tree, then by the shed, then up at the human house. That’s where I found almost half the herd up by the steps connecting to the human house. I spotted Rose out quickly and ran up to her.
“Rose!” I said, “Why is everyone up here?”
Rose’s eyes went big and she started backing away from me, as well as everyone else.
“Rose?” I asked, “What’s wrong? Where’s mom? Why are you backing away from me?”
“Lils—” Rose stopped, “we don’t want to get sick too.”
“What are you talking about? I’m fine! I feel great! All I needed was food and water? Where’s mom?” I asked again.
“No! Lilly! You don’t understand! All of us are up here to get the girl’s attention because we knew you were sick.”
“Rose I’m not sick….” I said. I still wondered where mom was….
All the sudden the door connected to the human house swang open
“My, my chickens….” The girl said with a grin.
Rose started clucking and went to her leg and scratched it.
“Little girl. What’s wrong?” the girl asked Rose.
Rose clucked again and looked my way. The girl looked at me and had a scared look on her face. She went over to me and chased after me. I ran obviously, but I started getting tired after the first 10 seconds so I let her take me. Then she ran into the human house… with me cradled in her arms.

Lilly's Life:

Chapter 4

I started screaming for mom, Rose, anyone! I was scared! I didn’t know what would happen to me in the human house. Once I was in here, it looked all foreign. It looked peaceful though. I was taken into a room with two other humans.
“Mom, Dad,” the human girl started to say, “This chick isn’t feeling well. I think we should give her antibiotics.”
The other two humans examined me.
“Yes,” one of them said, “keep her in the brooder and tomorrow we will go out and buy the antibiotics. Do you know all her symptoms?”
The girl human spoke again. “Umm, well she looks really pale. She’s been wheezing and shivering but yet sweating… I can tell cause she is panting like on a hot summer day.”
The other two humans nodded and the girl took me to another foreign room and stuck me in this big box with mulch so clean already lying on the bottom. I was still terrified, but at least my shivers stopped. I was warmer now. The room felt warm and cozy. My eyes grew heavier. Really? I’m still sleepy after that long nap? But I slipped into sleep again.

My eyes shot open when I heard a rattle. The human girl put in water and food for me. I didn’t even mind moving or scurrying to the corner because something told me, in my mind, that I shouldn’t run anymore.
As soon as she left I went up to eat and drink. The water tasted a little bit funny, but I didn’t care, I was thirsty!
Once I was done I went over to the middle of the box and sat down, absorbing everything around me. On top of the box was a covering… maybe so I don’t escape? There was a little platform sticking out and I decided to fly up on top of it. I peeked out. I was in a beautiful room. I smiled, and thought, maybe living here for a bit will be a learning experience.
I hobbled off the little platform to drink some more. Like I said, I am pretty thirsty.
