Lilly's Life

Chapter 18

We all looked at each other and our smiles were whipped off our faces. There was no hint in our eyes that we were just laughing and messing around just 20 seconds ago. Our eyes were big and scared. We all rushed over to wherever the scream was and we ran into Jaz.
“Jaz!” My mom shouted, “What happened!?”
Jaz shook his head, “I don’t know! I’m trying to find where it came from!”
We all went into the weeds next to the coop and searched around franticly. And we all gasped as we saw Ginger with a twisted foot.
“Ginger!” Jaz rushed to her, “What happened!? Was it you that screamed?”
She was crying and seemed to be trying to hide it from me. “No, it was the dancing potato next to me! Of course it was me!” She said sarcastily.
Jaz rolled his eyes, “Well then what happened?”
“There was a raccoon! And it was chasing me and it got scared by something that I don’t know of and when I looked behind me I ran into a pit and wasn’t paying attention and I fell and my foot twisted!”
“A coon…. You sure you didn’t see what it was afraid of?”
“I thought I saw… something black or something. I don’t know!”
Jaz thought about it but had a confused look on his face. Then he gave up. “I can only think of a bear. I know these forests and the plants, trees, and animals in them but all I can think of is a bear….” He went back into thought.
I looked back at Ginger and she had an emotionless face. She was staring at the ground… or was it her foot she was staring at?
“Ginger,” my mom started to say, “would you like some help up?”
She looked at my mom with eyes like a baby, “That would be nice.” She simply said. Then mom went over to help her up and dad did too. They both went back out to the human house and left me and Jaz just standing there. When I peeked a little at Jaz he was looking away and had a thoughtful look on.
“Jaz?” I asked.
He got snapped out of his thoughts and stared at me, “Yes Lilly?”
“Is everything alright?”
“Uh… everything… is uh… just peachy. Thanks for asking.” Then he shifted uneasily and skidded out of the weeds. Leaving me behind. Why would he leave me when there is a crazed coon on the loose? I suddenly felt something watching me and rushed out of the weeds.
I was glad to be out of those suffocating weeds. I looked everywhere for Jaz. I knew something was bothering him and he wouldn’t tell me. I started walking up to the human house. Did I feel bad for Ginger? She was a mean and rude hen, but did she deserve a twisted foot? I shook those thoughts away and didn’t see anyone up by the human house. Did they already get Ginger in the human house? What if she did and have to be by Rose!? Rose could never handle that!
“Mom? Dad?” I called out.
Nothing. Stillness. Silentness.
I knew I wasn’t alone for sure now….
