Lilly's Life:

Chapter 33

I blinked once. Twice. I stretched and yawned and looked outside. It was lightly snowing now and it was so beautiful out! There was practically a foot of snow out there!
I hopped down from my post and went out of the hen house. Everyone was crowding the feeding bin. Looks like the humans shoveled out our coop! I’m surprised they opened the gate too! I went to the gate. Looks like they shoveled some snow around the coop so we could free-range a little bit.
I gasped and smiled. The trees were breath-taking. They were piled with snow and so pretty! I went back in the coop to get my parents.
“Mom! Dad!” I say while looking for them up in their roosts.
“Yes, darling?” I hear mom say.
“Look! It’s so beautiful outside!” I said with cheer.
I heard mom and dad laugh together. I go back out of the coop and enjoy the scenery. It was just last night that the blizzard happened. I slept so good and so long I totally forgot about the coon from las-wait a second…. Rose! Where is Rose?! I start to panic and go to my parents again.
“Mom? Dad? Where’s Rose!?” I nearly shouted.
Dad flew down, “You mean… she wasn’t in there with you?”
I shook my head, terrified on what might have happened to her. I run out of the coop in search of Rose. I even went into the snow that wasn’t shoveled so I flew most of the time.
“ROSE!?” I scream out, “Rose? ROSE!?” I go up to the human shed and look under and over things but still couldn’t find her.
I went in the woods behind the shed and looked in there.
“ROSE, WHERE ARE YOU!?” I called out again.
“Lilly?” I heard a faint voice say.
“Rose? Is that you? Where are you, Rose?” I asked looking in all directions. My feet were starting to get really cold.
“Lil, over here.” It was coming from the right.
I flew and walked over to the voice. “Say something again, Rose.”
“Lilly… right here.” Rose sounded horrible. Her voice was harsh and dry.
I followed her voice and spotted her right away and I rushed to her. She was really pale. “Rose!!!!!” I picked her up with my wing. I looked up to the sky and called out for my dad and Jaz.
“Don’t worry Rose! We’ll get you warmth and food right away!” I didn’t want to panic at this point because I knew it’d turn out bad if I did.
I called out for my dad and Jaz once more and a few moments later they both appeared.
“Dad! Jaz! Here! Help Rose!”
They came rushing over and both picked her up and flew away. I stood there and stared as they flew away and around the corner. A tear rolled down my eye and it froze almost instantly. I really hope Rose will be ok. I really don’t want to lose her.

Lilly's Life:

Chapter 34

I trudge back around the human’s shed and to the coop in the snow. I didn’t care if my feet were cold and I didn’t care if I was half-way under the snow, I just hope Rose will be ok.
I finally reach the coop and saw my mom going into the hen house. I stopped her before she went in.
“Mom!?”
She turned around, “Yes?” I could tell she had been crying. She came down and faced me.
“Is Rose in there? Is she going to be ok?” I asked her, getting teary eyed.
“Yes Rose is in there. She is just getting warmed up. She has a slight cold but should be ok.”
I sighed, thank goodness. Mom then headed back into the hen house and I followed.
When I got in, it was crowded in here. Jaz, my dad, my mom, some hens, and me were in here. I tried squeezing between hens to get to Rose. She was laying down with her eyes closed and had a steady heartbeat. I went to her side instantly.
“Rose?” I croak.
She turned her head weakly to me and half-way opened her eyes, “Lil?” She managed to say.
A tear slid down from my eye, “Yes, Rose. It’s me.” I slipped my wing under hers and held it there. “I’m here for you. Forever and always.”
She smiled and closed her eyes, “Thanks.” She laid back on her side and let the warmth from the heat lamp absorb into her pale face. I smiled back at her and kept holding her wing. I looked up to Jaz, “She will be ok, right?”
“Oh yes! Don’t worry Lilly, she is in good hands.” Jaz grinned at me.
“Thank you.” I say.
Dad then came up to me and gave me a hug, “She’ll be alright, Lilz.”
I hugged him back and said nothing. He then walked away to Jaz’s side.
I put my wing under Rose’s feathers and felt her skin. She was warming up pretty good, but I still felt coldness.
I removed my wing and bent down to kiss her with my beak. All of the hens descended from Rose. Me, dad, mom, and Jaz were the only ones left. Mom then came up to me.
“You should go take a nap. You look tired and cold, hun.”
“Mom, I’m fine.” I was actually quite cold but I wasn’t tired.
“Go up to your roost, Lil and go get rest and warmth.”
“But—” I started to say.
“No buts!” She cut in.
“Fine!” I whined and went to my roost, watching Rose from there as my eye lids fell. I guess I was tired.
