Lime stone

I need to spread some lime to my yard... Should I leave the chickens locked up or let them wonder and peck??

If you spread before a rain it will be washed in, no problem. Same with fertilizers. Don't know if they would eat enough of the pelletized lime if given a chance to be a problem.
